Details
Dothiepin is an antidepressant drug prescribed for the treatment of depression and associated anxiety/panic disorders. It is of particular use in patients with ongoing feelings of sadness, despair, worthlessness, hopelessness, fatigue, pessimism and difficulty dealing with normal daily life. Dothiepin elevates mood, increase physical activity, improves appetite and restores interest in everyday activities. It is also useful in treating chronic pain disorders and insomnia. It may take several weeks for the full benefit to be achieved. During this period it is important to continue taking this medication. Because of its effect on appetite, patients on dothiepin may experience unwelcome weight gain. You should not take dothiepin if you have epilepsy, impaired liver or kidney function, a recent heart attack, a thyroid condition, an enlarged prostate or have difficulty in passing urine, glaucoma or are taking other medication.

Dothiepin is used to treat anxiety, cytotoxic chemotherapy, depression, nausea, vomiting (acute attacks).
Side Effects
Some of the side effects of dothiepin include tachycardia, hypomania, nausea, cholestatic jaundice, postural hypotension, sweating, skin rash, vomiting, tremor, drowsiness, constipation, diarrhoea, convulsions, dry mouth, paranoid delusions, and mania.
Drug Interactions
Dothiepin interacts negatively with warfarin, antihistamines, barbiturates, benzodiazepines, cimetidine¸ fluoxetine, fluvoxamine, monoamine oxidase-inhibitors, nitrates, oral contraceptives, rifampicin, sertraline, and tobacco.
Mechanism of action
Dothiepin has an effect on serotonin, noradrenaline and acethylcholine. These brain chemicals play an important role in mood, emotion, mental state and anxiety by elevating these brain chemicals, the conditions for which dothiepin is indicated, is greatly improved.
