Clomiphene is a non-steroidal fertility medicine. It causes the pituitary gland to release hormones needed to stimulate ovulation (the release of an egg from the ovary). Clomiphene is used to cause ovulation in women with certain medical conditions (such as polycystic ovary syndrome) that prevent naturally occurring ovulation. To make sure clomiphene is safe for you, tell your doctor if you have endometriosis or uterine fibroids. You should not use clomiphene if you are allergic to it, or if you have abnormal vaginal bleeding an ovarian cyst that is not related to polycystic ovary syndrome past or present liver disease a tumour of your pituitary gland an untreated or uncontrolled problem with your thyroid or adrenal gland or if you are pregnant. Using clomiphene for longer than 3 treatment cycles may increase your risk of developing an ovarian tumour.


Typical Uses

Clomiphene is used to treat infertility in women. It works by stimulating an increase in the amount of hormones that support the growth and release of a mature egg (ovulation). This medication is not recommended for women whose ovaries no longer make eggs properly (primary pituitary or ovarian failure).


Side Effects

Some women using clomiphene develop a condition called ovarian hyperstimulation syndrome (OHSS), especially after the first treatment. OHSS can be a life threatening condition. Inform your doctor immediacy if you have symptoms of OHSS such as stomach pain, bloating nausea, vomiting, diarrhoea rapid weight gain, especially in your face and midsection little or no urinating or pain when you breathe, rapid heart rate, feeling short of breath (especially when lying down). You should stop using clomiphene if you encounter pelvic pain or pressure, enlargement in your pelvic area vision problems seeing flashes of light or "floaters" in your vision increased sensitivity of your eyes to light or heavy vaginal bleeding.


Drug Interactions

  • Clomiphene+bexarotene- Using bexarotene together with clomiphene may increase the risk of pancreatitis, or inflammation of the pancreas. Talk to your doctor if you have any questions or concerns.


Mechanism of action

Clomiphene belongs to a class of medicines known as antiestrogens. It acts by changing the hormonal balance in the body. This stimulates release of eggs from the ovary, and helps in fertilization in females. In males, it causes improved production of sperms.
