Ceftibuten is in a group of drugs called cephalosporin antibiotics. It works by fighting bacteria in your body. Ceftibuten is used to treat many different types of infections caused by bacteria. Before taking ceftibuten, tell your doctor if you are allergic to any drugs (especially penicillins) or if you have kidney disease (or if you are on dialysis) or a history of intestinal problems, such as colitis. It is not known whether ceftibuten passes into breast milk or if it could harm a nursing baby. Do not use this medication without telling your doctor if you are breastfeeding a baby. The ceftibuten suspension (liquid) contains sucrose. Talk to your doctor before using this form of ceftibuten if you have diabetes.

Typical Uses

Ceftibuten is used to treat a wide variety of bacterial infections. This medication is known as a cephalosporin antibiotic. It works by stopping the growth of bacteria. This antibiotic treats only bacterial infections. It will not work for viral infections (e.g., common cold, flu). Unnecessary use or misuse of any antibiotic can lead to its decreased effectiveness. Take ceftibuten by mouth with or without food, usually once daily or as directed by your doctor. Continue to take ceftibuten until the full prescribed amount is finished, even if symptoms disappear after a few days. Stopping ceftibuten too early may result in a return of the infection.

Side Effects

Some of the side effects of ceftibuten include diarrhoea that is watery or bloody fever, chills, body aches, flu symptoms unusual bleeding blood in your urine seizure (convulsions) pale or yellowed skin, dark coloured urine, fever, confusion or weakness jaundice (yellowing of the skin or eyes) fever, swollen glands, rash or itching, joint pain, or general ill feeling fever, sore throat, and headache with a severe blistering, peeling, and red skin rash or increased thirst, loss of appetite, swelling, weight gain, feeling short of breath, urinating less than usual or not at all.

Drug Interactions

• Ceftibuten+anisindione- Ceftibuten may increase the effects of anisindione and cause you to bleed more easily. You may need more frequent monitoring of your INR after starting ceftibuten or whenever it is discontinued, and appropriate adjustments made in your dosage if necessary. Call your doctor immediately if you have any unusual bleeding, bruising, vomiting, blood in your urine or stools, headache, dizziness, or weakness during treatment with these medications.

• Ceftibuten+bumetanide- Cephalosporin antibiotics like ceftibuten can occasionally cause kidney problems, and using it with bumetanide may increase that risk. The interaction is more likely to occur when the cephalosporin is given at high dosages by injection into the vein or when it is given to the elderly or individuals with pre-existing kidney function impairment.

• Ceftibuten+dicumarol- Ceftibuten may increase the effects of dicumarol and cause you to bleed more easily. You may need more frequent monitoring of your INR after starting ceftibuten or whenever it is discontinued, and appropriate adjustments made in your dosage if necessary. Call your doctor immediately if you have any unusual bleeding, bruising, vomiting, blood in your urine or stools, headache, dizziness, or weakness during treatment with these medications.

• Ceftibuten+warfarin- Ceftibuten may increase the effects of warfarin and cause you to bleed more easily. You may need more frequent monitoring of your INR after starting ceftibuten or whenever it is discontinued, and appropriate adjustments made in your dosage if necessary.
