Details
Capreomycin is an antibiotic that fights bacteria in the body. Capreomycin is used in combination with other medicines to treat Mycobacterium tuberculosis. Capreomycin is usually given after other tuberculosis medications have been tried without success. Capreomycin can harm your kidneys or damage the nerve that controls your hearing. These effects are increased if you already have kidney disease or hearing problems, or when you also use certain other medicines, including injected antibiotics. To make sure capreomycin is safe for you, tell your doctor if you have kidney disease or hearing problems.
Typical Uses
Capreomycin is used with other drugs to treat tuberculosis (TB) infections. Capreomycin belongs to a class of drugs known as antibiotics. It is believed to work by preventing the growth of the bacteria that causes TB.
Side Effects
Get immediate medical assistance if you experience swelling, rapid weight gain, little or no urinating severe dizziness, spinning sensation, ringing or roaring sound in your ears, hearing loss, skin rash, bruising, severe tingling, numbness, pain, muscle weakness low calcium-numbness or tingly feeling around your mouth, fast or slow heart rate, muscle tightness or contraction, overactive reflexes or low potassium-confusion, uneven heart rate, extreme thirst, increased urination, leg discomfort, muscle weakness or limp feeling.
Drug Interactions
• Capreomycin+adefovir- Talk to your doctor before using adefovir together with capreomycin. Adefovir may cause kidney problems, and combining it with other medications that can also affect the kidney such as capreomycin may increase that risk.
• Capreomycin+amikacin- Using amikacin together with capreomycin could increase side effects of these medications and can cause damage to the kidneys or nerves.
• Capreomycin+dofetilide- Using dofetilide together with capreomycin can increase the risk of an irregular heart rhythm that may be serious. If your doctor prescribes these medications together, you may need regular monitoring of your electrolyte (magnesium, potassium) levels as well as other tests to safely use both medications. You should seek immediate medical attention if you develop sudden dizziness, light-headedness, fainting, or fast or pounding heartbeats during treatment with dofetilide.
• Capreomycin+gentamicin- Using gentamicin together with capreomycin could increase side effects of these medications and can cause damage to the kidneys or nerves.
• Capreomycin+neomycin- Using neomycin together with capreomycin could increase side effects of these medications and can cause damage to the kidneys or nerves.
Mechanism of action
Capreomycin belongs to group of medicines called anti-tuberculosis aminoglycoside antibiotics. It kills the bacteria by inhibiting protein synthesis or by producing abnormal proteins.
