Details
Buserelin is used to treat cancer of the prostate gland and breast cancer. It is similar to a hormone normally released from the hypothalamus gland. When given regularly, buserelin decreases testosterone levels. Reducing the amount of testosterone in the body is one way of treating cancer of the prostate. It controls the release of eggs from ovaries by stopping the production of natural hormones.
Typical Uses
Buserelin is used in the treatment of prostate cancer, endometriosis (condition in which the lining of uterus grows excessively and causes pain and heavy/ irregular periods) and in combination with other drugs for inducing ovulation.
Side Effects
Contact your doctor immediately if some of the side effects of buserelin occur such as bone pain, numbness or tingling of the hands or feet, trouble with urinating or weakness in the legs. Some side effects may occur that usually do not need medical attention. These side effects may go away during treatment as your body adjusts to the medicine. However, common side effects of buserelin include decrease in sexual desire, impotence or sudden sweating and feelings of warmth (hot flashes).
Drug Interactions
Buserelin may interact with oestrogen and oestrogen-containing birth control medicines (women) medications that affect blood sugar medications that promote loss of bone density medications that prolong the QT interval opioids or testosterone and androgens (males).
Mechanism of action
Buserelin belongs to a group of drugs called as gonadotropin-releasing hormone agonists (GnRH agonist). It reduces the production of testosterone (responsible for causing prostate cancer) and oestrogen (responsible for worsening endometriosis) and thereby relives the symptoms of these diseases.
