Tolterodine reduces spasms of the bladder muscles. Tolterodine is used to treat overactive bladder with symptoms of urinary frequency, urgency, and incontinence. You should not take this medication if you are allergic to tolterodine, if you have untreated or uncontrolled narrow-angle glaucoma, or if you have a blockage of the urinary tract, stomach, or intestines. Before you take tolterodine, tell your doctor if you have kidney or liver disease, glaucoma, myasthenia gravis, or a personal or family history of "Long QT syndrome." Tolterodine may impair your thinking or reactions. Be careful if you drive or do anything that requires you to be alert. To make sure you can safely take tolterodine, tell your doctor if you have liver disease kidney disease myasthenia gravis glaucoma or a personal or family history of Long QT syndrome.


Typical Uses

Tolterodine is used to treat an overactive bladder. By relaxing the muscles in the bladder, tolterodine improves your ability to control your urination. It helps to reduce leaking of urine, feelings of needing to urinate right away, and frequent trips to the bathroom. This medication belongs to the class of drugs known as antispasmodics.


Side Effects

Common tolterodine side effects may include chest pain, fast or uneven heart rate confusion, hallucinations urinating less than usual or not at all or painful or difficult urination.


Drug Interactions

  • Tolterodine+topiramate- Topiramate can cause increased body temperature and decreased sweating, and these effects may be worsened when combined with medications like tolterodine. Heat stroke and hospitalization may occur in some people, especially in warm weather and during vigorous exercise. Children are particularly susceptible. Talk to your doctor if you have any questions or concerns.
  • Tolterodine+zonisamide- Zonisamide can cause increased body temperature and decreased sweating, and these effects may be worsened when combined with medications like tolterodine. Mechanism of action

Tolterodine belongs to a class of medication called as anti-cholinergic. It acts by blocking the activity of chemical (acetylcholine) on muscles of urinary bladder, preventing their contraction.
