Tinidazole is an antibiotic that fights bacteria in the body. Tinidazole is used to treat certain infections caused by bacteria, such as infection of the intestines or vagina. It is also used to treat certain sexually transmitted infections. Before you take tinidazole, tell your doctor if you have kidney disease (or if you are on dialysis), epilepsy or other seizure disorder, a blood cell disorder such as anaemia or low platelets, or a weak immune system. Do not drink alcohol while taking tinidazole and for at least 3 days after your treatment ends. Typical Uses

Tinidazole is an antibiotic that is used to treat certain types of vaginal infections (bacterial vaginosis, trichomoniasis). It is also used to treat certain types of parasite infections (giardiasis, amebiasis). It works by stopping the growth of certain bacteria and parasites. This antibiotic treats only certain bacterial and parasitic infections. It will not work for viral infections (such as common cold, flu). Using any antibiotic when it is not needed can cause it to not work for future infections.


Side Effects

Common tinidazole side effects may include fever, chills, body aches, flu symptoms numbness, burning pain, or tingly feeling seizure (convulsions) vaginal itching or discharge nausea, vomiting, loss of appetite, indigestion constipation, diarrhoea, stomach cramps feeling weak or tired headache, dizziness or a metallic or bitter taste in your mouth.


Drug Interactions

  • Tinidazole+amprenavir- Using amprenavir and tinidazole is not recommended. The oral solution of amprenavir contains a high percentage of alcohol. When alcohol is combined with tinidazole there is a possibility of side effects such as flushing, headache, nausea, vomiting, sweating, and thirst. Avoid drinking alcohol while using amprenavir oral solution.


Mechanism of action

Tinidazole belongs to a class of drugs called as nitroimidazole antibiotics that act against microbes like protozoa and anaerobic bacteria. It enters the cells of bacteria or protozoa, damages or interfere s in the production of their DNA thereby killing them and reducing the infection.
