Details
Sucralfate is used for the treatment of certain intestinal ulcers. It is also used in patients that have had certain intestinal ulcers to prevent further development of more ulcers. Sucralfate is a gastric protective agent. It works by forming a protective layer on the ulcer to serve as a barrier against acid, bile salts, and enzymes in the stomach. Before using sucralfate, tell your doctor if you have kidney problems or are on dialysis, or you have blockage of the intestines or difficulty swallowing. Take sucralfate at least 2 hours after other medicines. If you are not sure about the best time to take sucralfate, ask your doctor.
Typical Uses
Sucralfate is used to treat and prevent ulcers in the intestines. Sucralfate forms a coating over ulcers, protecting the area from further injury. This helps ulcers heal more quickly. This drug may also be used to treat and prevent ulcers in the stomach, and to prevent ulcers caused by the use of aspirin or other anti-inflammatory drugs (e.g., ibuprofen, naproxen).
Side Effects
Common sucralfate side effects may include nausea, indigestion, skin rashes, dry mouth, and constipation.
Drug Interactions
- Sucralfate+dolutegravir- Dolutegravir and sucralfate should not be taken orally at the same time. Products that contain aluminium, calcium, iron, magnesium and/or other minerals may interfere with the absorption of dolutegravir and reduce its effectiveness in treating HIV infection. You should take dolutegravir at least two hours before or six hours after the sucralfate dose.
- Sucralfate+paricalcitol- Using sucralfate together with paricalcitol is not recommended. Combining these medications may increase the blood levels of aluminium and cause aluminium bone toxicity. The risk is increased the longer you use these medications. Some over-the-counter preparations such as antacids may also contain aluminium.
Mechanism of action
Sucralfate belongs to a category of drugs called as ulcer-healing medications. It works by forming a protective lining over the ulcer and protects it from acid, bile salts and enzymes.
