Torsemide is a loop diuretic (water pill) that prevents your body from absorbing too much salt, allowing the salt to instead be passed in your urine. Torsemide treats fluid retention (edema) in people with congestive heart failure, liver disease, or a kidney disorder such as nephrotic syndrome. This medication is also used to treat high blood pressure (hypertension). You should not use this medication if you are allergic to torsemide or if you are unable to urinate. To make sure torsemide is safe for you, tell your doctor if you have kidney disease cirrhosis or other liver disease or an allergy to sulpha drugs.

Typical Uses

Torsemide is used to reduce extra fluid in the body (edema) caused by conditions such as heart failure, liver disease, and kidney disease. This can lessen symptoms such as shortness of breath and swelling in your arms, legs, and abdomen. This drug is also used to treat high blood pressure. Lowering high blood pressure helps prevent strokes, heart attacks, and kidney problems. Torsemide is a "water pill" (diuretic) that causes you to make more urine. This helps your body get rid of extra water and salt.

Side Effects

Common torsemide side effects may include vomiting, fast heartbeats, feeling restless ringing in your ears, sudden hearing loss feeling very thirsty or hot, being unable to urinate, heavy sweating, or hot and dry skin feeling like you might pass out low potassium (confusion, uneven heart rate, extreme thirst, increased urination, leg discomfort, muscle weakness or limp feeling) headache, slurred speech, hallucinations, vomiting, severe weakness, muscle cramps, loss of coordination, feeling unsteady, seizure (convulsions), fainting, shallow breathing or breathing that stops severe pain in your upper stomach spreading to your back, nausea and vomiting sudden numbness or weakness, sudden severe headache, problems with speech or balance swelling or warmth in one or both legs, chest pain, sudden cough, wheezing, rapid breathing, coughing up blood or high blood sugar (increased thirst, increased urination, hunger, dry mouth, fruity breath odour, drowsiness, dry skin, blurred vision, weight loss).

Drug Interactions

• Torsemide+amikacin- Ask your doctor before using amikacin together with torsemide this can increase the effects of amikacin. This can cause damage to the kidneys or hearing loss. This may be more likely to occur in older adults or those with high dosages of drug, pre-existing kidney problems, and dehydration. Tell your doctor if you experience hearing loss, dizziness, numbness, skin tingling, muscle twitching, or seizures which may be signs of nerve damage.
• Torsemide+cisapride- Using cisapride together with torsemide is not recommended. Combining these medications can increase the risk of an irregular heart rhythm that may be serious. You should seek immediate medical attention if you develop sudden dizziness, light-headedness, fainting, or fast or pounding heartbeats during treatment with cisapride.
• Torsemide+droperidol- Using droperidol together with torsemide can increase the risk of an irregular heart rhythm that may be serious and potentially life-threatening, although it is a relatively rare side effect. You may be more susceptible if you have a heart condition called congenital long QT syndrome, other cardiac diseases, conduction abnormalities, or electrolyte disturbances.
• Torsemide+gentamicin- Ask your doctor before using gentamicin together with torsemide this can increase the effects of gentamicin. This can cause damage to the kidneys or hearing loss. This may be more likely to occur in older adults or those with high dosages of drug, pre-existing kidney problems, and dehydration. Tell your doctor if you experience hearing loss, dizziness, numbness, skin tingling, muscle twitch
