Sargramostim is a man-made form of a protein that stimulates the growth of white blood cells in your body. White blood cells help your body fight against infection. Sargramostim is used to increase white blood cells and help prevent serious infection in conditions such as leukaemia, bone marrow transplant, and pre-chemotherapy blood cell collection. Sargramostim is for use in adults who are at least 55 years old. You should not use this medication if you are allergic to sargramostim or to yeast. Sargramostim should not be used within 24 hours before or after you receive chemotherapy or radiation. To make sure you can safely use sargramostim, tell your doctor if you have fluid retention a build-up of fluid around your lungs (also called pleural effusion) bone marrow cancer heart disease, high blood pressure congestive heart failure epilepsy or other seizure disorder liver or kidney disease or asthma, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), or other breathing problems.


Typical Uses

Sargramostim is a man-made version of a certain natural substance made in your body. It is used to help your body make more white blood cells. White blood cells are important to help you fight off infections. Sargramostim is given to people whose ability to make white blood cells is reduced (for instance, due to chemotherapy). It is also used in certain treatment procedures (such as bone marrow/stem cell transplant).


Side Effects

Common sargramostim side effects may include high fever, chills, sore throat, stuffy nose, flu symptoms white patches or sores inside your mouth or on your lips easy bruising, unusual bleeding (nose, mouth, vagina, or rectum), purple or red pinpoint spots under your skin swelling, rapid weight gain chest pain, fast or uneven heart rate weakness or fainting black, bloody, or tarry stools coughing up blood or vomit that looks like coffee grounds painful or difficult urination dark urine, clay-coloured stools, jaundice (yellowing of the skin or eyes) breathing problems or problems with vision, speech, balance, or memory.


Drug Interactions

  • Sargramostim+azacitidine- Using sargramostim during or too soon after completion of a course of azacitidine may alter the effects of either medication. Sargramostim should generally not be given within 24 hours before or 24 hours after treatment with azacitidine.
  • Sargramostim+bosutinib- Using sargramostim during or too soon after completion of a course of bosutinib may alter the effects of either medication. Sargramostim should generally not be given within 24 hours before or 24 hours after treatment with bosutinib.
  • Sargramostim+carboplatin- Using sargramostim during or too soon after completion of a course of carboplatin may alter the effects of either medication. Sargramostim should generally not be given within 24 hours before or 24 hours after treatment with carboplatin.
  • Sargramostim+dasatinib- Using sargramostim during or too soon after completion of a course of dasatinib may alter the effects of either medication. Sargramostim should generally not be given within 24 hours before or 24 hours after treatment with dasatinib.
  • Sargramostim+methotrexate- Using sargramostim during or too soon after completion of a course of methotrexate may alter the effects of either medication. Sargramostim should generally not be given within 24 hours before or 24 hours after treatment with methotrexate.


Mechanism of action

Sargramostim binds to the Granulocyte-macrophage colony stimulating factor receptor (GM-CSF-R-alpha or CSF2R) which stimulates a JAK2 STAT1/STAT3 signal transduction pathway. This leads to the production of hemopoietic cells and neutrophils.
