Ranolazine is an anti-anginal medication. It works by improving blood flow to help the heart work more efficiently. Ranolazine is used to treat chronic angina (chest pain). Ranolazine is not for use during an acute (emergency) attack of angina. You should not take ranolazine if you are allergic to it, or if you have cirrhosis of the liver. To make sure ranolazine is safe for you, tell your doctor if you have a heart rhythm disorder liver disease kidney disease or a personal or family history of long QT syndrome.


Typical Uses

Ranolazine is used alone or with other medications to treat ongoing angina (heart disease that causes intense chest pain).


Side Effects

Common ranolazine side effects may include a light-headed feeling, like you might pass out headache with chest pain and severe dizziness, fast or pounding heartbeats or kidney problems-little or no urination, painful or difficult urination, swelling in your feet or ankles, feeling tired or short of breath.


Drug Interactions

  • Ranolazine+amprenavir- Using ranolazine together with amprenavir is not recommended. Combining these medications may significantly increase the blood levels and effects of ranolazine. High blood levels of ranolazine can occasionally cause an irregular heart rhythm that may be serious.
  • Ranolazine+atazanavir- Using ranolazine together with atazanavir is not recommended. Combining these medications may significantly increase the blood levels and effects of ranolazine. High blood levels of ranolazine can occasionally cause an irregular heart rhythm that may be serious.
  • Ranolazine+bepridil- Using bepridil together with ranolazine can increase the risk of an irregular heart rhythm that may be serious and potentially life-threatening, although it is a relatively rare side effect. You may be more susceptible if you have a heart condition called congenital long QT syndrome, other cardiac diseases, conduction abnormalities, or electrolyte disturbances.
  • Ranolazine+cisapride- You should only take cisapride if you are prescribed the medication through an investigational limited access program and are closely monitored by your doctor. Using cisapride together with ranolazine is not recommended. Combining these medications can increase the risk of an irregular heart rhythm that may be serious and potentially life-threatening, although it is a relatively rare side effect.
