Pyrazinamide is an antibiotic that fights bacteria. Pyrazinamide is used to treat tuberculosis (TB) in adults and children. Pyrazinamide must be used with other TB medicines. Tuberculosis can become resistant to treatment if pyrazinamide is used alone. To make sure pyrazinamide is safe for you, tell your doctor if you have HIV or AIDS gout liver disease diabetes or if you drink large amounts of alcohol.


Typical Uses

Pyrazinamide is used with other medications to treat tuberculosis (TB). It is an antibiotic and works by stopping the growth of bacteria. This antibiotic treats only bacterial infections. It will not work for viral infections (such as common cold, flu). Unnecessary use or misuse of any antibiotic can lead to its decreased effectiveness.


Side Effects

Common pyrazinamide side effects may include fever joint pain or swelling easy bruising or bleeding (nosebleeds, bleeding gums) gout flare-up symptoms-joint pain, stiffness, redness, or swelling (especially at night) or liver problems-nausea, upper stomach pain, itching, tiredness, loss of appetite, dark urine, clay-coloured stools, jaundice (yellowing of the skin or eyes).


Drug Interactions

  • Pyrazinamide+rifampin- Ask your doctor before using rifampin together with pyrazinamide. This can cause damage to the liver. Liver function and drug levels in the blood may be monitored with blood tests during treatment. Call your doctor if you experience fever, rash, loss of appetite, nausea, vomiting, fatigue, right upper abdominal pain, dark urine, and jaundice.
  • Pyrazinamide+leflunomide- Leflunomide may cause liver problems, and using it with other medications that can also affect the liver such as pyrazinamide may increase that risk. Because leflunomide can stay in your blood for a prolonged period after the last dose, interactions with other drugs may occur for some time even after you have stopped taking it. You should avoid or limit the use of alcohol while being treated with these medications.
  • Pyrazinamide+mipomersen- Mipomersen may cause liver problems, and using it with other medications that can also affect the liver such as pyrazinamide may increase that risk. You should avoid or limit the use of alcohol to no more than one drink per day while being treated with these medications.
  • Pyrazinamide+teriflunomide- Teriflunomide may cause liver problems, and using it with other medications that can also affect the liver such as pyrazinamide may increase that risk. Because teriflunomide can stay in your blood for a prolonged period after the last dose, interactions with other drugs may occur for some time even after you have stopped taking it. You should avoid or limit the use of alcohol while being treated with these medications.
