Propofol slows the activity of your brain and nervous system. Propofol is used to help you relax before and during general anaesthesia for surgery or other medical procedures. It is also used in critically ill patients who require a breathing tube connected to a ventilator (a machine that moves air in and out of the lungs when a person cannot breathe on their own). To make sure this medicine is safe for you, tell your doctor if you have epilepsy or other seizure disorder or high cholesterol or triglycerides (a type of fat in the blood).

Typical Uses

Propofol is an injectable drug. It's an anaesthetic used to put people to sleep before surgery. It's also given for sedation in hospital intensive care units (ICUs). Propofol should only be administered to you in a healthcare setting by trained healthcare workers who can determine your proper dosage, support your breathing with supplemental oxygen or a mechanical ventilator if necessary, and monitor other vital signs while you are sedated.

Side Effects

Common propofol side effects may include a light-headed feeling (like you might pass out) even after feeling awake weak or shallow breathing or severe pain or discomfort where the injection is given.

Drug Interactions

• Propofol+phenelzine- Before getting anaesthesia with propofol, tell your doctor if you are taking phenelzine. Using these medications together may significantly affect your blood pressure. In some cases, your doctor may want you to stop taking phenelzine for 10 to 14 days before you undergo surgery.
• Propofol+tranylcypromine- Before getting anaesthesia with propofol, tell your doctor if you are taking tranylcypromine. Using these medications together may significantly affect your blood pressure. In some cases, your doctor may want you to stop taking tranylcypromine for 10 to 14 days before you undergo surgery.
