Details
Phenazopyridine is a pain reliever that affects the lower part of your urinary tract (bladder and urethra). Phenazopyridine is used to treat urinary symptoms such as pain or burning, increased urination, and increased urge to urinate. These symptoms can be caused by infection, injury, surgery, catheter, or other conditions that irritate the bladder. Phenazopyridine will treat urinary symptoms, but this medication will not treat a urinary tract infection. To make sure phenazopyridine is safe for you, tell your doctor if you have liver disease diabetes or a genetic enzyme deficiency called glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase (G6PD) deficiency. Drink plenty of liquids while you are taking phenazopyridine. Take phenazopyridine after meals.
Typical Uses
Phenazopyridine is used to relieve symptoms caused by irritation of the urinary tract such as pain, burning, and the feeling of needing to urinate urgently or frequently. This drug does not treat the cause of the urinary irritation, but it can help relieve the symptoms while other treatments take effect. Phenazopyridine is a dye that works as a painkiller to soothe the lining of the urinary tract.
Side Effects
Stop using phenazopyridine and inform your doctor immediately if you have little or no urinating swelling, rapid weight gain confusion, loss of appetite, pain in your side or lower back fever, pale or yellowed skin, stomach pain, nausea and vomiting or blue or purple appearance of your skin.
Drug Interactions
- Phenazopyridine+leflunomide- Leflunomide may cause liver problems, and using it with other medications that can also affect the liver such as phenazopyridine may increase that risk. Because leflunomide can stay in your blood for a prolonged period after the last dose, interactions with other drugs may occur for some time even after you have stopped taking it.
- Phenazopyridine+mipomersen- Mipomersen may cause liver problems, and using it with other medications that can also affect the liver such as phenazopyridine may increase that risk. You should avoid or limit the use of alcohol to no more than one drink per day while being treated with these medications.
- Phenazopyridine+teriflunomide- Teriflunomide may cause liver problems, and using it with other medications that can also affect the liver such as phenazopyridine may increase that risk. Because teriflunomide can stay in your blood for a prolonged period after the last dose, interactions with other drugs may occur for some time even after you have stopped taking it.
- Phenazopyridine+lomitapide- Lomitapide may cause liver problems, and using it with other medications that can also affect the liver such as phenazopyridine may increase that risk. You should avoid or limit the use of alcohol to no more than one drink per day while being treated with these medications.
Mechanism of action
Phenazopyridine is an orange dye acts as urinary analgesic (pain reliever), it is believed to act as a local anaesthetic on the lining of urinary tract thereby providing relief of symptoms of urinary tract infection. But it does not kill the bacteria.
