Details
Pentazocine is an opioid pain medication. An opioid is sometimes called a narcotic. Pentazocine is used to treat moderate to severe pain. It is also used as part of anaesthesia for surgery. To make sure pentazocine is safe for you, tell your doctor if you have any type of breathing problem or lung disease asthma or sulphite allergy a history of head injury, brain tumour, or mental illness a history of alcoholism or drug addiction (pentazocine may be habit-forming) a seizure disorder high blood pressure, heart disease, history of recent heart attack liver or kidney disease or gallbladder disease.
Typical Uses
Pentazocine is used to treat moderate to severe pain. It contains 2 medications, pentazocine and naloxone. Pentazocine is a narcotic pain reliever (opiate-type). It acts on certain centres in the brain to give you pain relief. Naloxone helps to prevent misuse of this product. It blocks the effect of pentazocine and may cause withdrawal reactions if this product is dissolved and injected. Naloxone does not have any effect when taken by mouth.
Side Effects
Common pentazocine side effects may include pain, burning, irritation, or skin changes where the injection was given confusion, hallucinations weak or shallow breathing painful or difficult urination or a light-headed feeling, like you might pass out.
Drug Interactions
- Pentazocine+propoxyphene- Using propoxyphene together with pentazocine may increase side effects such as dizziness, drowsiness, confusion, and difficulty concentrating. Some people, especially the elderly, may also experience impairment in thinking, judgment, and motor coordination. You should take propoxyphene exactly as prescribed by your doctor. Do not take larger doses or use the drug more frequently than prescribed.
- Pentazocine+bupropion- Bupropion may rarely cause seizures, and combining it with other medications that can also cause seizures such as pentazocine may increase that risk. The interaction may be more likely if you are elderly, undergoing alcohol or drug withdrawal, have a history of seizures, or have a condition affecting the central nervous system such as a brain tumour or head trauma.
- Pentazocine+dolasetron- Using dolasetron together with pentazocine can increase the risk of a rare but serious condition called the serotonin syndrome, which may include symptoms such as confusion, hallucination, seizure, extreme changes in blood pressure, increased heart rate, fever, excessive sweating, shivering or shaking, blurred vision, muscle spasm or stiffness, tremor, incoordination, stomach cramp, nausea, vomiting, and diarrhoea. Severe cases may result in coma and even death.
- Pentazocine+fluoxetine- Using fluoxetine together with pentazocine can increase the risk of a rare but serious condition called the serotonin syndrome, which may include symptoms such as confusion, hallucination, seizure, extreme changes in blood pressure,
