Details
Fluconazole is an antifungal medicine. Fluconazole is used to treat infections caused by fungus, which can invade any part of the body including the mouth, throat, oesophagus, lungs, bladder, genital area, and the blood. Fluconazole is also used to prevent fungal infection in people who have a weak immune system caused by cancer treatment, bone marrow transplant, or diseases such as AIDS. To make sure fluconazole is safe for you, tell your doctor if you have liver disease HIV or AIDS cancer heart disease or heart rhythm disorder a personal or family history of Long QT syndrome kidney disease or if you are allergic to other anti-fungal medicine.
Typical Uses
Fluconazole is used to prevent and treat a variety of fungal and yeast infections. It belongs to a class of drugs called azole antifungals. It works by stopping the growth of certain types of fungus.
Side Effects
Common side effects of fluconazole include headache with chest pain and severe dizziness, fainting, fast or pounding heartbeats fever, chills, body aches, flu symptoms easy bruising or bleeding, unusual weakness seizure (convulsions) liver problems-nausea, upper stomach pain, itching, tired feeling, loss of appetite, dark urine, clay-coloured stools, jaundice (yellowing of the skin or eyes) skin rash or skin lesions or severe skin reaction-fever, sore throat, swelling in your face or tongue, burning in your eyes, skin pain, followed by a red or purple skin rash that spreads (especially in the face or upper body) and causes blistering and peeling.
Drug Interactions
• Fluconazole+anisindione- Using anisindione together with fluconazole may cause you to bleed more easily. You may need a dose adjustment based on your prothrombin time.
• Fluconazole+avanafil- Fluconazole may significantly increase the blood levels of avanafil. This can increase the risk and/or severity of side effects such as low blood pressure, dizziness, light-headedness, fainting, visual disturbances, ringing in the ears, vision or hearing loss, chest pain or tightness, irregular heartbeat, and priapism (prolonged and painful erection unrelated to sexual activity).
• Fluconazole+bedaquiline- Using bedaquiline together with fluconazole can increase the risk of an irregular heart rhythm that may be serious and potentially life-threatening, although it is a relatively rare side effect. You may be more susceptible if you have a heart condition called congenital long QT syndrome, other cardiac diseases, conduction abnormalities, or electrolyte disturbances.
• Fluconazole+clopidogrel- Talk to your doctor before using clopidogrel together with fluconazole. Combining these medications may reduce the effects of clopidogrel in helping to prevent heart attacks or strokes. Your doctor may be able to prescribe alternatives that do not interact, or you may need a dose adjustment or more frequent monitoring to safely use both medications.
• Fluconazole+dicumarol- Using dicumarol together with fluconazole may cause you to bleed more easily. You may need a dose adjustment based on your prothrombin time.
Mechanism of action
Fluconazole belongs to class of antifungals called triazoles. Fluconazole acts mainly by preventing the growth of fungi. It interacts with chemicals inside the fungus and prevents the synthesis of an essential component of fungal cell membrane (ergosterol) this results in leakage of cellular contents from fungal cell, ultimately killing the fungi.
