Details
Febuxostat reduces the production of uric acid in your body. Uric acid build-up can lead to gout or kidney stones. Febuxostat is used to treat gout. To make sure you can safely take febuxostat, tell your doctor if you have kidney disease liver disease heart disease a history of heart attack or stroke cancer Lesch-Nyhan syndrome or if you have ever received an organ transplant (kidney, liver, lung, heart). You may have an increase in gout symptom flares when you first start taking febuxostat. For best results, keep taking the medication as directed.
Typical Uses
Febuxostat is used to lower uric acid levels in people with gout. Febuxostat works by reducing the amount of uric acid made by the body. Increased uric acid levels can cause gout.
Side Effects
Common side effects of febuxostat include chest pain or heavy feeling, pain spreading to the arm or shoulder, nausea, sweating, general ill feeling sudden numbness or weakness, especially on one side of the body sudden headache, confusion, problems with vision, speech, or balance or nausea, stomach pain, low fever, loss of appetite, dark urine, clay-coloured stools, jaundice (yellowing of the skin or eyes).
Drug Interactions
• Febuxostat+azathioprine- Using azathioprine together with febuxostat is not recommended. Febuxostat can increase the blood levels of azathioprine, possibly to toxic levels. It is important to tell your doctor about all other medications you use, including vitamins and herbs.
• Febuxostat+leflunomide- Leflunomide may cause liver problems, and using it with other medications that can also affect the liver such as febuxostat may increase that risk. Because leflunomide can stay in your blood for a prolonged period after the last dose, interactions with other drugs may occur for some time even after you have stopped taking it. You should avoid or limit the use of alcohol while being treated with these medications.
• Febuxostat+lomitapide- Lomitapide may cause liver problems, and using it with other medications that can also affect the liver such as febuxostat may increase that risk. You should avoid or limit the use of alcohol to no more than one drink per day while being treated with these medications.
• Febuxostat+mercaptopurine- Using mercaptopurine together with febuxostat is not recommended. Febuxostat can increase the blood levels of mercaptopurine, possibly to toxic levels. It is important to tell your doctor about all other medications you use, including vitamins and herbs.
• Febuxostat+teriflunomide- Teriflunomide may cause liver problems, and using it with other medications that can also affect the liver such as febuxostat may increase that risk. Because teriflunomide can stay in your blood for a prolonged period after the last dose, interactions with ot
