Domperidone is used to help to move food faster through your food pipe (oesophagus), stomach and gut. This is so that it does not stay in the same place for too long. It is a dopamine agonist, and belongs to a group of medicines known as anti-emetics. In general this drug is used to relieve symptoms of feeling sick (nausea) and sickness (vomiting). Domperidone should not be used in allergies to domperidone or any of the other ingredients, tumour of the pituitary gland (prolactinoma), stomach or duodenal ulcer, heart problems, frequent severe stomach cramps, a blockage, tear or perforated ulcer in your intestines, black, tarry bowel motions (stools) or notice blood in your bowel motions, this could be a sign of bleeding in the stomach or intestines, breast feeding, moderate or severe liver problems or severe kidney problems.


Typical Uses

Domperidone increases movement through the digestive system. It is used to treat symptoms of stomach disorders. It may also be used to prevent nausea and vomiting caused by certain medications. Due to safety concerns, this medication is not to be used by breast-feeding women to increase production of breast milk.


Side Effects

Some of the side effects of domperidone include headache, dizziness, dry mouth, nervousness, flushing, or irritability may occur the first several days as your body adjusts to the medication. Trouble sleeping, stomach cramps, hot flashes and leg cramps have also been reported. If any of these effects continue or become bothersome, inform your doctor. Notify your doctor immediately if you develop chest pain, slow/fast/irregular heartbeat, swelling of the feet or ankles, difficulty urinating, swelling of the breasts or discharge from the nipple in men or women, menstrual changes, sexual difficulties.


Drug Interactions

Domperidone should not be used with oral ketoconazole (used for fungal infections) erythromycin (an antibiotic) telaprevir and ritonavir (used for HIV infection).
