Dimenhydrinate is used to prevent and treat nausea, vomiting, dizziness, and vertigo associated with motion sickness. Before taking dimenhydrinate, tell your doctor if you have kidney or liver disease, an enlarged prostate, difficulty urinating, bladder problems, glaucoma, asthma, or an irregular heartbeat or any other type of heart disease. You may not be able to take dimenhydrinate, or you may require a lower dose or special monitoring during treatment if you have any of the mentioned conditions. Dimenhydrinate is not recommended for use by children younger than 2 years of age, except under the direction of a doctor.


Typical Uses

Dimenhydrinate is an antihistamine used to prevent and treat nausea, vomiting, and dizziness caused by motion sickness. Dimenhydrinate is also used to treat nausea and dizziness caused by inner ear problems (such as Meniere's disease).


Side Effects

Stop taking dimenhydrinate and seek immediate medical assistance if you experience an allergic reaction. Some of the other side effects of dimenhydrinate include drowsiness or dizziness restlessness, excitation, nervousness, or insomnia blurred or double vision dry mouth, nose, or throat decreased appetite, nausea, vomiting, or diarrhoea difficulty urinating or an irregular or fast heartbeat.


Drug Interactions

• Dimenhydrinate+propoxyphene- Using propoxyphene together with dimenhydrinate may increase side effects such as dizziness, drowsiness, confusion, and difficulty concentrating. Some people, especially the elderly, may also experience impairment in thinking, judgment, and motor coordination. You should take propoxyphene exactly as prescribed by your doctor.

• Dimenhydrinate+topiramate- Topiramate can cause increased body temperature and decreased sweating, and these effects may be worsened when combined with medications like dimenhydrinate. Heat stroke and hospitalization may occur in some people, especially in warm weather and during vigorous exercise. Children are particularly susceptible. Talk to your doctor if you have any questions or concerns.

• Dimenhydrinate+zonisamide- Zonisamide can cause increased body temperature and decreased sweating, and these effects may be worsened when combined with medications like dimenhydrinate. Heat stroke and hospitalization may occur in some people, especially in warm weather and during vigorous exercise. Children are particularly susceptible.


Mechanism of action

Dimenhydrinate belongs to the group of medicines called antihistamine and anti-cholinergic. It acts by inhibiting the chemical substance called histamine and acetylcholine, thus reducing the symptoms of motion sickness.
