Cyproheptadine an antihistamine that reduces the natural chemical histamine in the body. Histamine can produce symptoms of sneezing, itching, watery eyes, and runny nose. Cyproheptadine is used to treat sneezing, itching, watery eyes, runny nose and other symptoms of allergies. You should not use cyproheptadine if you are allergic to it, or if you have narrow-angle glaucoma a stomach ulcer or obstruction an enlarged prostate or urination problems if you are having an asthma attack or if you are elderly or have a debilitating disease. Side Effects

Stop taking cyproheptadine and inform your doctor if you encounter confusion, hallucinations, unusual thoughts or behaviour seizure (convulsions) ringing in your ears feeling like you might pass out fast or pounding heartbeats easy bruising or bleeding urinating less than usual or not at all or pale or yellowed skin, dark coloured urine, fever, or unusual weakness.


Drug Interactions

• Cyproheptadine+propoxyphene- Using propoxyphene together with cyproheptadine may increase side effects such as dizziness, drowsiness, confusion, and difficulty concentrating. Some people, especially the elderly, may also experience impairment in thinking, judgment, and motor coordination. You should take propoxyphene exactly as prescribed by your doctor.

• Cyproheptadine+potassium chloride- The following interaction applies only if you are taking potassium in a solid formulation. Talk to your doctor before using potassium oral tablets or capsules together with cyproheptadine. Depending on the dose of cyproheptadine and your overall physical health, combining these medications may increase the irritant effects of potassium on your stomach and upper intestine.

• Cyproheptadine+topiramate- Topiramate can cause increased body temperature and decreased sweating, and these effects may be worsened when combined with medications like cyproheptadine. Heat stroke and hospitalization may occur in some people, especially in warm weather and during vigorous exercise. Children are particularly susceptible.

• Cyproheptadine+zonisamide- Zonisamide can cause increased body temperature and decreased sweating, and these effects may be worsened when combined with medications like cyproheptadine.
