Clotrimazole topical is an antifungal medication that fights infections caused by fungus. Clotrimazole topical (for the skin) is used to treat skin infections such as athlete's foot, jock itch, ringworm, and yeast infections.

Typical Uses

Clotrimazole is used to treat skin infections such as athlete's foot, jock itch, ringworm, and other fungal skin infections (candidiasis). This medication is also used to treat a skin condition known as pityriasis (tinea versicolor), a fungal infection that causes a lightening or darkening of the skin of the neck, chest, arms, or legs. Clotrimazole is an azole antifungal that works by preventing the growth of fungus. Do not apply this medication in the eyes, nose, mouth, or vagina.

Side Effects

Stop using clotrimazole topical and contact your medical professional if you experience severe blistering of treated skin swelling, redness, or oozing or severe burning, itching, or other irritation.

Drug Interactions

• Clotrimazole+alfentani- Clotrimazole may significantly increase the blood levels of alfentanil. This can increase the risk or severity of side effects such as excessive sedation, respiratory depression, low blood pressure, and irregular heart rhythm. You may need a dose adjustment to safely use both medications. Talk to your doctor if you have any questions or concerns.

• Clotrimazole+brexpiprazole- Clotrimazole may increase the blood levels of brexpiprazole. This can make you more likely to develop side effects such as drowsiness, seizure, Parkinson-like symptoms, abnormal muscle movements, and low blood pressure. You may need a dose adjustment or more frequent monitoring by your doctor to safely use both medications.

• Clotrimazole+fentanyl- Clotrimazole may significantly increase the blood levels and effects of fentanyl. You may need a dose adjustment or more frequent monitoring by your doctor to safely use both medications. Talk to your doctor if you have any questions or concerns.

• Clotrimazole+halofantrine- Clotrimazole may increase the blood levels of halofantrine. High blood levels of halofantrine can increase the risk of an irregular heart rhythm that may be serious and potentially life-threatening, although it is a relatively rare side effect. You may be more susceptible if you have a heart condition called congenital long QT syndrome, other cardiac diseases, conduction abnormalities, or electrolyte disturbances.

Mechanism of action

Clotrimazole acts against the fungi by impairing the permeability of the fungal cell wall and inhibits the activity of enzymes within the cell. It specifically inhibits the biosynthesis of ergosterol and other sterols required for cell membrane production.
