Clioquinol topical is an antifungal and antibacterial medication. Clioquinol topical prevents fungus from growing on your skin. Clioquinol topical is used to treat skin infections such as eczema, athlete's foot, and other fungal infections. Do not use clioquinol topical if you have had an allergic reaction to it in the past. Do not use clioquinol topical without first talking to your doctor if you are pregnant or breastfeeding a baby.

Typical Uses

Clioquinol is used in combination with a steroid or antibacterial agent as ear drops to treat inflammation or infection of the external ear (Otitis Externa). Clioquinol is also used to treat skin infections such as eczema (itchy skin), athlete's foot (ringworm infection, a fungal infection of the foot), jock itch (fungal infection of the groin area) and other ringworm infections.

Side Effects

Serious side effects of clioquinol topical use are unexpected. Stop using clioquinol topical and inform your doctor if you experience unusual or severe blistering, itching, redness, peeling, dryness, swelling, or irritation of the skin.

Drug Interactions

• Clioquinol+vigabatrin- Talk to your doctor before using vigabatrin together with clioquinol topical. Combining these medications, especially for prolonged periods, may increase the risk of serious side effects associated with vision loss. Routine vision testing is required during treatment with vigabatrin.

Mechanism of action

Clioquinol has antifungal and antibacterial actions. It works by preventing the growth and multiplication of the organisms. The combination of betamethasone and clioquinol is used to treat inflammatory skin disorders that are either already infected, or your doctor thinks are likely to become infected, for example because you are using airtight dressings. Dressings can create a warm, moist environment where bacteria and fungi can grow easily.
