Ceftazidime is in a group of drugs called cephalosporin antibiotics. It works by fighting bacteria in your body. Ceftazidime injection is used to treat many kinds of bacterial infections, including severe or life-threatening forms. To make sure cefazolin is safe for you, tell your doctor if you have kidney disease liver disease a stomach or intestinal disorder such as colitis seizures or epilepsy if you are malnourished or if you are allergic to any type of penicillin. Ceftazidime can make birth control pills less effective. Ask your doctor about using non hormonal birth control (condom, diaphragm with spermicide) to prevent pregnancy. Ceftazidime can pass into breast milk and may harm a nursing baby. Inform your doctor if you are breastfeeding a baby.


Typical Uses

Ceftazidime is an antibiotic used to treat a wide variety of bacterial infections. This medication is known as a cephalosporin antibiotic. It works by stopping the growth of bacteria. Ceftazidime is given by injection into a muscle or vein as directed by your doctor. The dosage is based on your medical condition and response to treatment. Continue to use ceftazidime until the full prescribed treatment period is finished, even if symptoms disappear after a few days. Stopping ceftazidime too early may result in a return of the infection.


Side Effects

Some of the side effects of ceftazidime include confusion, hallucinations, feeling like you might pass out seizure (black-out or convulsions) pale or yellowed skin, dark coloured urine, fever, confusion or weakness severe stomach pain, diarrhoea that is watery or bloody or cold feeling, discoloration, or skin changes in your fingers. Ceftazidime may also cause nausea, vomiting, stomach pain headache, dizziness numbness or tingly feeling or vaginal itching or discharge.


Drug Interactions

• Ceftazidime+amikacin- Amikacin can sometimes cause kidney damage and using it with a cephalosporin antibiotic like ceftazidime may increase that risk. Talk to your doctor if you have any questions or concerns.

• Ceftazidime+bumetanide- Cephalosporin antibiotics like ceftazidime can occasionally cause kidney problems, and using it with bumetanide may increase that risk. The interaction is more likely to occur when the cephalosporin is given at high doses by injection into the vein or when it is given to the elderly or individuals with pre-existing kidney function impairment.

• Ceftazidime+cyclosporine- Talk to your doctor before using ceftazidime together with cyclosporine. Combining these medications may increase the risk of kidney and/or nerve damage. You may need a dose adjustment or more frequent monitoring by your doctor to safely use both medications.

• Ceftazidime+nimodipine- Talk to your doctor before using ceftazidime together with nimodipine. Combining these medications may increase the risk of kidney and/or nerve damage. You may need a dose adjustment or more frequent monitoring by your doctor to safely use both medications.


Mechanism of action

Ceftazidime belongs to group of medicines called cephalosporin antibiotics. It kills the bacteria by interrupting the bacterial cell wall (outer coating of bacteria) formation. As a result, the bacterial cell wall is weakened and ruptures, thereby killing the bacteria.
