Details
Cefprozil is a cephalosporin antibiotic. It works by fighting bacteria in your body. Cefprozil is used to treat many different types of infections caused by bacteria. To make sure cefprozil is safe for you, tell your doctor if you have kidney disease a history of intestinal problems, such as colitis or if you are allergic to penicillin or other medicines. Cefprozil can pass into breast milk and may harm a nursing baby. Tell your doctor if you are breast-feeding a baby. The cefprozil suspension (liquid) may contain phenylalanine. Talk to your doctor before using this form of cefprozil if you have phenylketonuria (PKU). This medicine can cause unusual results with certain lab tests for glucose (sugar) in the urine. Tell any doctor who treats you that you are using cefprozil.
Typical Uses
Cefprozil is used to treat a wide variety of bacterial infections. This medication is known as a cephalosporin antibiotic. It works by stopping the growth of bacteria. This antibiotic treats only bacterial infections. It will not work for viral infections (e.g., common cold, flu). Unnecessary use or overuse of any antibiotic can lead to its decreased effectiveness. Continue to take cefprozil until the full-prescribed amount is finished, even if symptoms disappear after a few days. Stopping cefprozil too early may allow bacteria to continue to grow, which may result in a relapse of the infection.
Side Effects
Some of the side effects of cefprozil include diarrhoea that is watery or bloody sudden weakness or ill feeling, cold or flu symptoms, mouth sores, red or swollen gums, pain when swallowing pale or yellowed skin, dark coloured urine, confusion or weakness unusual bleeding bruising, severe tingling, numbness, pain, muscle weakness seizure (convulsions) or severe skin reaction-fever, sore throat, swelling in your face or tongue, burning in your eyes, skin pain, followed by a red or purple skin rash that spreads (especially in the face or upper body) and causes blistering and peeling.
Drug Interactions
• Cefprozil+balsalazide- Talk to your doctor before using balsalazide together with cefprozil. Antibiotics like cefprozil may reduce the effectiveness of balsalazide when taken orally. Your doctor may be able to prescribe alternatives that do not interact, or you may need a dose adjustment or more frequent monitoring by your doctor to safely use both medications.
• Cefprozil+chloramphenicol- Chloramphenicol may diminish the effects of cefprozil in the treatment of certain infections. Talk to your doctor if you have any questions or concerns. Your doctor may be able to prescribe alternatives that do not interact, or you may need a dose adjustment or more frequent monitoring by your doctor to safely use both medications.
• Cefprozil+furosemide- Cephalosporin antibiotics like cefprozil can occasionally cause kidney problems, and using it with furosemide may increase that risk. The interaction is more likely to occur when the cephalosporin is given at high dosages by injection into the vein or when it is given to the elderly or individuals with pre-existing kidney function impairment.
• Cefprozil+torsemide- Cephalosporin antibiotics like cefprozil can occasionally cause kidney problems, and using it with torsemide may increase that risk. The interaction is more likely to occur when the cephalosporin is given at high dosages by injection into the vein or when it is given to the elderly or individuals with pre-existing kidney function impairment.
