Details
Cefpirome is a cephalosporin antibiotic, prescribed for susceptible infections including bacteraemia, lower respiratory tract infections, pneumonia, promyelocytic leukaemia, septicaemia, severe infections including bacteraemia and septicaemia and infections in neutropenic patients, skin infections, soft tissue infections, urinary tract infection.
Typical Uses
Cefpirome is used to treat lower respiratory tract infections, complicated upper and lower urinary tract infections, bacteraemia/septicaemia (bacteria in the blood), skin and soft tissue infections, severe infections in intensive care patients, and infections in neutropenic (patients who have low white blood cells) and immunocompromised (impaired immune system) patients.
Side Effects
Some of the side effects of cefpirome include rash, itching and hives nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain and diarrhoea increased level of liver enzymes kidney inflammation/impairment decrease in blood counts pain and swelling fever and epilepsy.
Drug Interactions
• Cefpirome+BCG- Cefpirome decreases the effect of BCG vaccine by pharmacodynamic antagonism. This may cause serious or life-threatening interaction. This interaction is contraindicated unless benefits outweigh risks and no alternatives are available. This combination is not recommended.
• Cefpirome+Typhoid Vaccine- Cefpirome decreases the effect of typhoid vaccine by pharmacodynamic antagonism. This may cause serious or life-threatening interaction. This interaction is contradicted unless benefits outweigh risks and no alternatives are available. This combination is not recommended.
• Cefpirome+digoxin- Cefpirome will increase the level or effect of digoxin by altering intestinal flora. It applies only to oral form of both the agents. Significant interaction is highly possible, so monitor closely.
Mechanism of action
Cefpirome belongs to class of medications called cephalosporin antibiotics. It works by arresting the bacterial cell wall synthesis resulting in bacterial cell death.
