Carbamazepine is an anticonvulsant. It works by decreasing nerve impulses that cause seizures and pain. Carbamazepine is used to treat seizures and nerve pain such as trigeminal neuralgia and diabetic neuropathy. Carbamazepine is also used to treat bipolar disorder. You should not take this medicine if you have a history of bone marrow suppression, or if you are allergic to carbamazepine or to an antidepressant such as amitriptyline, desipramine, doxepin, imipramine or nortriptyline. Do not use carbamazepine if you have taken an MAO inhibitor in the past 14 days. A dangerous drug interaction could occur.


Typical Uses

Carbamazepine is used to prevent and control seizures. This medication is known as an anticonvulsant or anti-epileptic drug. It is also used to relieve certain types of nerve pain (such as trigeminal neuralgia). This medication works by reducing the spread of seizure activity in the brain and restoring the normal balance of nerve activity. This drug may also be used to treat certain mental/mood conditions (such as bipolar disorder) and other types of nerve pain.


Side Effects

Report any new or worsening symptoms to your doctor, such as sudden mood or behaviour changes, depression, anxiety, insomnia, or if you feel agitated, hostile, restless, irritable, or have thoughts about suicide or hurting yourself. Get immediate medical assistance if you experience the first sign of any skin rash, no matter how mild slow, fast, or pounding heartbeats feeling light-headed or short of breath sudden weakness or ill feeling, fever, chills, pale skin, sore throat, bleeding gums, nosebleeds nausea, upper stomach pain, itching, tiredness, loss of appetite, dark urine, clay-coloured stools, jaundice (yellowing of the skin or eyes) headache, confusion, slurred speech, severe weakness, feeling unsteady etc.


Drug Interactions

• Carbamazepine+abiraterone- Carbamazepine can significantly reduce the blood levels of abiraterone, which may make the medication less effective in treating your condition. Talk to your doctor if you have any questions or concerns.

• Carbamazepine+apremilast- Carbamazepine can significantly reduce the blood levels of apremilast, which may make the medication less effective in treating your condition. Talk to your doctor if you have any questions or concerns.

• Carbamazepine+apremilast- Carbamazepine may significantly reduce the blood levels of ceritinib, which may make the medication less effective in treating your cancer. Talk to your doctor if you have any questions or concerns.

• Carbamazepine+delavirdine- Carbamazepine may significantly reduce the blood levels of delavirdine, which may make the medication less effective in treating your cancer. Talk to your doctor if you have any questions or concerns.
