Brimonidine reduces the amount of fluid in the eye, which decreases pressure inside the eye. Brimonidine ophthalmic (for the eyes) is used to treat open-angle glaucoma or ocular hypertension (high pressure inside the eye). To make sure brimonidine ophthalmic is safe for you tell your doctor if you have congestive heart failure, coronary artery disease, history of stroke or blood clot low blood pressure, circulation problems (such as Reynaud’s syndrome) depression any allergies or a history of glaucoma or increased pressure inside your eye. Brimonidine ophthalmic should not be given to a child younger than 2 years old.


Typical Uses

Brimonidine is used to treat open-angle glaucoma or high fluid pressure in the eye. Lowering high fluid pressure in the eye reduces the risk of vision loss, nerve damage, or blindness. This medication lowers pressure by allowing better fluid drainage from within the eye and also by reducing the amount of fluid formed in the eye. It is known as an alpha agonist.


Side Effects

Some of the side effects of brimonidine ophthalmic include eye pain or increased watering severe swelling, redness, burning, or discomfort in or around your eye drowsiness, tired feeling dry mouth, blurred vision mild itching, redness, or irritation of your eyes or mild stinging or burning when using the eye drops.


Drug Interactions

• Brimonidine+acebutolol- After using brimonidine ophthalmic, some of the medication may be absorbed into the bloodstream and occasionally produce cardiovascular side effects such as decreases in blood pressure and heart rate. Combining it with acebutolol or other medications that can also have these effects may increase the risk. You may experience headache, dizziness, light-headedness, fainting, or changes in pulse or heart beat.

• Brimonidine+alfuzosin- After using brimonidine ophthalmic, some of the medication may be absorbed into the bloodstream and occasionally produce cardiovascular side effects such as decreases in blood pressure and heart rate. Combining it with alfuzosin or other medications that can also have these effects may increase the risk. You may experience headache, dizziness, light-headedness, fainting, or changes in pulse or heart beat.

• Brimonidine+perindopril- After using brimonidine ophthalmic, some of the medication may be absorbed into the bloodstream and occasionally produce cardiovascular side effects such as decreases in blood pressure and heart rate. Combining it with perindopril or other medications that can also have these effects may increase the risk. You may experience headache, dizziness, light-headedness, fainting, or changes in pulse or heart beat.

• Brimonidine+azatadine- After using brimonidine ophthalmic, some of the medication may be absorbed into the bloodstream and occasionally produce central nervous system side effects such as dizziness, drowsiness, and difficulty concentrating. Combining it with azatadine or other medications that can also have these effects may increase the risk.


Mechanism of action

Brimonidine belongs to the group of medicines called sympathomimetics. It reduces the amount of fluid in the eye and thus reduces the eye pressure.
