Details
Bivalirudin helps to prevent platelets in your blood from sticking together and forming a blood clot. An unwanted blood clot can occur with certain heart or blood vessel conditions. Bivalirudin is used to prevent blood clots in people with severe chest pain or other conditions who are undergoing a procedure called angioplasty (to open blocked arteries). To make sure bivalirudin is safe for you tell your doctor if you have heart disease kidney disease or a bleeding or blood clotting disorder, such as haemophilia.
Typical Uses
Bivalirudin is an anticoagulant (thrombin inhibitor), prescribed for preventing blood clots in patients with unstable angina undergoing percutaneous transluminal coronary angioplasty {(PTCA) procedure to open blocked arteries}.
Side Effects
Some of the side effects of bivalirudin include a light-headed feeling, like you might pass out easy bruising, unusual bleeding (nose, mouth, vagina, or rectum), purple or red pinpoint spots under your skin any bleeding that will not stop slow heartbeats little or no urinating signs of stomach bleeding bloody or tarry stools, coughing up blood or vomit that looks like coffee grounds signs of a stroke sudden numbness or weakness (especially on one side of the body), sudden severe headache, slurred speech, problems with vision or balance signs of a blood clot in the lung chest pain, sudden cough, wheezing, rapid breathing or increased blood pressure.
Drug Interactions
• Bivalirudin+alteplase- Using alteplase together with bivalirudin can cause you to bleed more easily. You may need a dose adjustment in addition to testing of your prothrombin time.
• Bivalirudin+cabozantinib- Using cabozantinib together with bivalirudin may increase the risk of bleeding. In clinical studies, treatment with cabozantinib alone has been associated with severe and sometimes fatal haemorrhage.
• Bivalirudin+dabigatran- Using dabigatran together with bivalirudin may increase the risk of bleeding, including severe and sometimes fatal haemorrhage. Talk to your doctor if you have any questions or concerns. You should seek immediate medical attention if you experience any unusual bleeding or bruising, or have other signs and symptoms of bleeding such as dizziness light-headedness red or black, tarry stools coughing up or vomiting fresh or dried blood that looks like coffee grounds severe headache and weakness.
• Bivalirudin+fondaparinux- Using bivalirudin together with fondaparinux may increase the risk of bleeding, including severe and sometimes fatal haemorrhage. Talk to your doctor if you have any questions or concerns. Your doctor may already be aware of the risks, but has determined that this is the best course of treatment for you and has taken appropriate precautions and is monitoring you closely for any potential complications.
