Bisoprolol is in a group of drugs called beta-blockers. Beta-blockers affect the heart and circulation (blood flow through arteries and veins). Bisoprolol is used to treat hypertension (high blood pressure). Before you take bisoprolol, tell your doctor if you have asthma, bronchitis, emphysema diabetes (taking bisoprolol can make it harder for you to tell when you have low blood sugar) a heart problem such as angina, heart block, slow heart rhythm, or congestive heart failure liver or kidney disease a thyroid disorder or problems with circulation (such as Reynaud’s syndrome).


Typical Uses

Bisoprolol is used with or without other medications to treat high blood pressure (hypertension). Lowering high blood pressure helps prevent strokes, heart attacks, and kidney problems. This drug may also be used to treat mild to moderate heart failure. Use this medication regularly to get the most benefit from it. To help you remember, take it at the same time each day.


Side Effects

Some of the side effects of bisoprolol include abdominal cramps, diarrhoea, dizziness, fatigue, depression, headache, nausea, impotence, slow heart rate, low blood pressure, numbness, tingling, cold extremities, sore throat and shortness of breath unsteadiness, fainting, headache, sensory loss, drowsiness, sleep disturbances, vivid dreams, depression, anxiety/restlessness and decreased concentration/memory palpitations and other rhythm disturbances, chest pain and congestive heart failure dry mouth, abdominal pain, inflammation of stomach, indigestion, vomiting, constipation and peptic ulcer muscle/joint pain, back/neck pain, muscle cramps and tremor increased sweating, rash, acne, psoriasis, skin irritation, itching, flushing, sweating, hair loss, severe allergic reactions and inflammation visual disturbances, eye pain/pressure, increased tears, tinnitus (ringing in human ear), decreased hearing, earache and taste abnormalities joint inflammation etc.


Drug Interactions

• Bisoprolol+aminophylline- Ask your doctor before using bisoprolol together with aminophylline. Using these medications together can make bisoprolol less effective and increase the effects of aminophylline. Contact your doctor if you experience nausea, vomiting, insomnia, tremors, restlessness, uneven heartbeats, or difficulty breathing.

• Bisoprolol+diltiazem- Using diltiazem and bisoprolol together may lead to increased side effects. This can cause fatigue, headache, fainting, swelling of the extremities, weight gain, shortness of breath, chest pain, increased or decreased heartbeat, or irregular heartbeat. If you take both medications together, tell your doctor if you have any of these symptoms.

• Bisoprolol+dolasetron- Talk to your doctor before using dolasetron together with bisoprolol. Combining these medications can increase the risk of an irregular heart rhythm that may be serious. You may need a dose adjustment or special tests to safely use both medications. You should seek immediate medical attention if you develop sudden dizziness, light-headedness, fainting, or irregular heartbeat during treatment with these drugs, whether together or alone.

• Bisoprolol+fingolimod- Before starting fingolimod, let your doctor know if you are currently receiving treatment with bisoprolol. Using fingolimod in this situation can cause excessive slowing of your heart rate that can lead to serious or life-threatening cardiac complications. This is most likely to occur early on after you start treatment with fingolimod, especially within the first 20 hours after the first dose.
