Details of Bacampicillin Salt (Generic Drug)
Details
Bacampicillin is an antibiotic in the class of drugs called penicillins. It fights bacteria in the body. Bacampicillin is used to treat many different types of infections, such as tonsillitis, pneumonia, bronchitis, urinary tract infections, gonorrhoea, and infections of the skin. Before taking this medication, tell your doctor if you have kidney disease, stomach or intestinal disease, or infectious mononucleosis. You may not be able to take bacampicillin because of an increased risk of side effects. Moreover, bacampicillin may decrease the effectiveness of birth control pills. You may want to use a second method of birth control while taking bacampicillin to ensure protection from unintended pregnancy. Bacampicillin should be taken 400 to 800 mg orally every 12 hours for 7 to 10 days, depending on the nature and severity of the infection.
Typical Uses
Bacampicillin is used to treat bacterial infections such as tonsillitis, pneumonia (lung infection), bronchitis (inflammation of airway), urinary tract infections, gonorrhoea, and infections of the skin.
Side Effects
Stop taking bacampicillin and seek medical attention as soon as possible if you have an allergic reaction (shortness of breath closing of the throat hives swelling of the lips, face, or tongue rash or fainting) seizures severe watery diarrhoea and abdominal cramps or unusual bleeding or bruising.
Drug Interactions
• Bacampicillin+methotrexate- Talk to your doctor before using methotrexate together with bacampicillin. Medications like bacampicillin, especially when given at high dosages for serious infections, can sometimes increase the blood levels and effects of methotrexate. You may have increased side effects such as nausea, vomiting, mouth ulcers, and low blood cell counts, which can make you more likely to develop anaemia, bleeding problems, and infections.
Mechanism of action
During absorption from the gastrointestinal tract, bacampicillin is hydrolyzed by esterases present in the intestinal wall. It is microbiologically active as ampicillin, and exerts a bactericidal action through the inhibition of the biosynthesis of cell wall mucopeptides. Bacampicillin fights against bacteria in the body.
