Aztreonam is an antibiotic that fights severe or life-threatening infection caused by bacteria. Aztreonam is used to treat severe infections of the blood, urinary tract, lower respiratory tract, skin, stomach, or female reproductive organs. To make sure aztreonam is safe for you, tell your doctor if you have kidney disease liver disease or a history of any type of allergy. Aztreonam can pass into breast milk and may harm a nursing baby. Tell your doctor if you are breastfeeding a baby. This medicine is not approved for use by anyone younger than 9 months old.


Typical Uses

Aztreonam is used to treat a wide variety of bacterial infections including infections of the urinary tract, skin, bone, stomach, joint, blood, female reproductive system, as well as cystic fibrosis (lung infection causing difficulty in breathing in abnormal airways) and pneumonia. This medication is an antibiotic that works by stopping the growth of bacteria.


Side Effects

Aztreonam may cause certain side effects including injection- seizures, confusion, vertigo, tingling, dizziness, inhalation- rash, injection- rash, nasal congestion, pharyngolaryngeal pain, abdominal pain, vomiting, diarrhoea, nausea, pseudo membranous colitis, inflammation of vein after IV administration, pain/swelling at injection site, cough, wheezing, asthma, difficulty in breathing, chest discomfort, fever.


Drug Interactions

• Aztreonam+anisindione- Aztreonam may increase the effects of anisindione. You may need more frequent monitoring of your prothrombin time. You should seek immediate medical attention if you experience any unusual bleeding or bruising, or have other signs and symptoms of bleeding such as dizziness light-headedness red or black, tarry stools coughing up or vomiting fresh or dried blood that looks like coffee grounds severe headache and weakness.

• Aztreonam+dicumarol- Aztreonam may increase the effects of dicumarol. You may need more frequent monitoring of your prothrombin time. You should seek immediate medical attention if you experience any unusual bleeding or bruising, or have other signs and symptoms of bleeding such as dizziness light-headedness red or black, tarry stools coughing up or vomiting fresh or dried blood that looks like coffee grounds severe headache and weakness.

• Aztreonam+entecavir- Using entecavir together with aztreonam may increase the blood levels of one or both medications. Contact your doctor if your condition changes or you experience increased side effects. You may need a dose adjustment or more frequent monitoring by your doctor to safely use both medications.

• Aztreonam+pemetrexed- Aztreonam may increase the blood levels and effects of pemetrexed. You may be more likely to develop serious side effects such as anaemia, bleeding problems, infections, and nerve damage when these medications are used together.

Aztreonam is monobactam antibiotic, prescribed for serious infections caused by susceptible gram negative bacteria like urinary tract infection, lower respiratory tract infection. It works by killing sensitive bacteria that cause infection.
