Atomoxetine affects chemicals in the brain and nerves that contribute to hyperactivity and impulse control. Atomoxetine is used to treat attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). You should not use atomoxetine if you have narrow-angle glaucoma, an adrenal gland tumors, heart disease or coronary artery disease, or moderate to severe high blood pressure. Atomoxetine has caused sudden death in certain people. Tell your doctor if you have heart problems or a congenital heart defect high blood pressure or a family history of heart disease or sudden death.


Typical Uses

Atomoxetine is used to treat attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) as part of a total treatment plan, including psychological, social, and other treatments. It may help to increase the ability to pay attention, concentrate, stay focused, and stop fidgeting. It is thought to work by restoring the balance of certain natural substances (neurotransmitters) in the brain.


Side Effects

Atomoxetine can affect growth in children. Tell your doctor if your child is not growing at a normal rate while using this medicine. Stop using this medicine and contact your doctor if you have chest pain, trouble breathing, feeling like you might pass out hallucinations (seeing or hearing things that are not real), new behaviour problems, aggression, hostility, paranoia painful or difficult urination erection is painful or lasts longer than 4 hours (this is a rare side effect) or liver problems-nausea, upper stomach pain, itching, tired feeling, loss of appetite, dark urine, clay-coloured stools, jaundice (yellowing of the skin or eyes).


Drug Interactions

• Atomoxetine+amiodarone- Using amiodarone together with atomoxetine can increase the risk of an irregular heart rhythm that may be serious and potentially life-threatening, although it is a relatively rare side effect.

• Atomoxetine+bedaquiline- Using bedaquiline together with atomoxetine can increase the risk of an irregular heart rhythm that may be serious and potentially life-threatening, although it is a relatively rare side effect.

• Atomoxetine+ceritinib- Using ceritinib together with atomoxetine can increase the risk of an irregular heart rhythm that may be serious and potentially life-threatening, although it is a relatively rare side effect.

• Atomoxetine+dolasetron- Using dolasetron together with atomoxetine can increase the risk of an irregular heart rhythm that may be serious and potentially life-threatening, although it is a relatively rare side effect.

• Atomoxetine+gatifloxacin- Using gatifloxacin together with atomoxetine can increase the risk of an irregular heart rhythm that may be serious and potentially life-threatening, although it is a relatively rare side effect.


Mechanism of action

Atomoxetine is a selective norepinephrine reuptake inhibitor (SNRI), prescribed for Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). It increases the level of norepinephrine in the brain, which is needed to control behaviour.
