Details
Trandolapril is an ACE inhibitor. ACE stands for angiotensin converting enzyme. Trandolapril is used to treat high blood pressure (hypertension), and to improve survival after a heart attack. If you have diabetes, do not use trandolapril together with any medication that contains aliskiren. To make sure trandolapril is safe for you, tell your doctor if you have kidney disease (or if you are on dialysis) liver disease any history of heart disease or congestive heart failure diabetes. You may also need to avoid taking trandolapril with aliskiren if you have kidney disease. Trandolapril should not be used in pregnancy.
Typical Uses
Trandolapril belongs to a group of medications called ACE inhibitors. It is used to treat high blood pressure (hypertension). It works by relaxing blood vessels, causing them to widen. Lowering high blood pressure helps prevent strokes, heart attacks and kidney problems. This medication is also used to improve survival after an acute heart attack and with other drugs (e.g., "water pills"/diuretics, digoxin) to treat congestive heart failure. This medication may also be used to help protect the kidneys from damage due to diabetes.

Common trandolapril side effects may include a light-headed feeling, like you might pass out sudden weakness or ill feeling, fever, chills, sore throat, painful mouth sores, pain when swallowing, skin sores, cold or flu symptoms upper stomach pain, and jaundice (yellowing of the skin or eyes) chest pain, pounding heartbeats or fluttering in your chest lung problems-anxiety, sweating, pale skin, severe shortness of breath, wheezing, gasping for breath, cough with foamy mucus kidney problems-little or no urination, painful or difficult urination, swelling in your feet or ankles, feeling tired or short of breath high potassium-nausea, slow or unusual heart rate, weakness, loss of movement or low calcium-numbness or tingly feeling around your mouth, fast or slow heart rate, muscle tightness or contraction, overactive reflexes.
Drug Interactions
- Trandolapril+aliskiren- Using aliskiren together with trandolapril may increase the risk of serious side effects such as kidney problems, low blood pressure, and high potassium levels in the blood. High levels of potassium can develop into a condition known as hyperkalemia, which in severe cases can lead to kidney failure, muscle paralysis, irregular heart rhythm, and cardiac arrest. These medications should generally not be used together, particularly if you are diabetic or have pre-existing kidney problems.
- Trandolapril+amiloride- Using trandolapril together with amiloride may increase the levels of potassium in your blood (hyperkalemia), especially if you are dehydrated or have kidney disease, diabetes, heart failure, or if you are an older adult.
- Trandolapril+iron dextran- If you are currently being treated with trandolapril, you should talk to your doctor before receiving iron dextran. Medications like trandolapril may occasionally increase the side effects of iron dextran such as allergic reactions, low blood pressure, light-headedness, fever, flushing, chest pain, back pain, rash, itching, nausea, vomiting, diarrhoea, and abdominal pain.
- Trandolapril+leflunomide- Leflunomide may cause liver problems, and using it with other medications that can also affect the liver such as trandolapril may increase that risk. Because leflunomide can stay in your blood for a prolonged period after the last dose, interactions with other drugs may occur for some time even after you have stopped taking it. You should avoid or limit the use of alcohol while being treated with these medications.

Mechanism of action
Trandolapril is an inhibitor of ACE and blocks the formation of angiotensin II thereby lowering blood pressure. The drop in blood pressure also means that the heart doesn't have to work as hard because the pressure it must pump blood against is less. The efficiency of a failing heart improves, and the output of blood from the heart increases. Thus, ACE inhibitors such as trandolapril in addition to high blood pressure.
