Details of Ticarcillin Salt (Generic Drug)
Details
Ticarcillin is used for treating infections caused by certain bacteria. Ticarcillin is a penicillin antibiotic. It works by blocking the growth of the bacteria's cell wall, resulting in the death of the bacteria. Do not use ticarcillin if you are allergic to any ingredient in ticarcillin or to penicillin antibiotics or taking a tetracycline antibiotic. Before using ticarcillin, tell your doctor if you have had a severe allergic reaction (e.g., severe rash, hives, difficulty breathing, and dizziness) to a cephalosporin (e.g., cephalexin) or other beta-lactam antibiotic kidney problems, bleeding or clotting problems, or abnormal blood electrolyte levels, or if you are dehydrated.
Typical Uses
Ticarcillin is used (in combination with clavulanic acid) in the treatment of various bacterial infections involving bones, joints, skin and soft tissue, respiratory tract, ear, nose and throat, kidney and other parts of the body.
Drug Interactions
- Ticarcillin+methotrexate- Talk to your doctor before using methotrexate together with ticarcillin. Medications like ticarcillin, especially when given at high dosages for serious infections, can sometimes increase the blood levels and effects of methotrexate. You may have increased side effects such as nausea, vomiting, mouth ulcers, and low blood cell counts, which can make you more likely to develop anaemia, bleeding problems, and infections.
Mechanism of action
Ticarcillin belongs to group of medications called as penicillin antibiotics. It kills the bacteria by interrupting with bacterial cell wall (outer coating of bacteria) formation. As a result, the bacterial cell wall is weakened and ruptured, thereby killing the bacteria.
