Details
Tiagabine is an anti-epileptic medication, also called an anticonvulsant. Tiagabine is used in combination with other medications to treat partial seizures in adults and children who are at least 12 years old. New seizures have occurred in some people who are not epileptic who take medicine for partial seizures. To make sure tiagabine is safe for you, tell your doctor if you have a confirmed diagnosis of epilepsy a history of a seizure that did not stop (also called status epilepticus) liver disease a history of abnormal brain wave test (EEG) or a history of depression, mood disorder, or suicidal thoughts or actions. Some people have thoughts about suicide while taking seizure medication. Tiagabine should not be given to a child younger than 12 years old.
Typical Uses
Tiagabine is used with other medications to treat certain types of seizures (e.g., partial seizures). This medication is known as an anticonvulsant or anti-epileptic drug. It works by reducing the spread of seizure activity in the brain. When tiagabine has been used for conditions other than epilepsy, serious reactions (including seizures in people who have never had them) have occurred.
Side Effects
Common tiagabine side effects may include new or worsened seizures confusion, extreme weakness a light-headed feeling, like you might pass out vision problems or severe skin reaction-fever, sore throat, swelling in your face or tongue, burning in your eyes, skin pain followed by a red or purple skin rash that spreads (especially in the face or upper body) and causes blistering and peeling.
Drug Interactions
- Tiagabine+propoxyphene- Using propoxyphene together with tiagabine may increase side effects such as dizziness, drowsiness, confusion, and difficulty concentrating. Some people, especially the elderly, may also experience impairment in thinking, judgment, and motor coordination. You should take propoxyphene exactly as prescribed by your doctor. Do not take larger doses or use the drug more frequently than prescribed.
- Tiagabine+buprenorphine- Using buprenorphine together with other medications that cause central nervous system depression such as tiagabine can lead to serious side effects such as respiratory distress, coma, or even death. You may need a dose adjustment or more frequent monitoring by your doctor to safely use both medications.
Mechanism of action
Tiagabine belongs to class of medications called as anti-epileptics. It works by increasing the levels of Gamma amino butyric acid (GABA), a natural inhibitory brain chemical that control transmission of signals and thus prevent transmission of abnormal signals causing seizures.
