Details

Sevoflurane is used for causing general anaesthesia (loss of consciousness) before and during surgery. Sevoflurane is an anaesthetic. It works by depressing activity in the central nervous system, which causes loss of consciousness. Do not use sevoflurane if you are allergic to any ingredient in sevoflurane or have a history of severely high body temperature (malignant hyperthermia). Before using sevoflurane, tell your doctor if you have allergies to medicines, foods or other substances if you have liver or kidney problems or seizures or if you are taking any prescription or non-prescription medicine, herbal preparation, or dietary supplement.

Typical Uses

Sevoflurane is used to cause general anaesthesia (loss of consciousness) before and during surgery. It is inhaled (breathed in). Although sevoflurane can be used by itself, combinations of anaesthetics are often used together. This helps produce more effective anaesthesia in some patients.

Side Effects

Common sevoflurane side effects may include agitation dizziness drowsiness increased cough increased saliva light-headedness nausea shivering vomiting.

Drug Interactions

  • Sevoflurane+amiodarone- Using amiodarone together with sevoflurane can increase the risk of an irregular heart rhythm that may be serious and potentially life-threatening, although it is a relatively rare side effect. You may be more susceptible if you have a heart condition called congenital long QT syndrome, other cardiac diseases, conduction abnormalities, or electrolyte disturbances.
  • Sevoflurane+bedaquiline- Using bedaquiline together with sevoflurane can increase the risk of an irregular heart rhythm that may be serious and potentially life-threatening, although it is a relatively rare side effect. You may be more susceptible if you have a heart condition called congenital long QT syndrome, other cardiac diseases, conduction abnormalities, or electrolyte disturbances.
  • Sevoflurane+citalopram- Using citalopram together with sevoflurane can increase the risk of an irregular heart rhythm that may be serious and potentially life-threatening, although it is a relatively rare side effect. You may be more susceptible if you have a heart condition called congenital long QT syndrome, other cardiac diseases, conduction abnormalities, or electrolyte disturbances.
  • Sevoflurane+epinephrine- Ask your doctor before using epinephrine together with sevoflurane. Taking these drugs together can affect the rhythm of your heart. This can cause symptoms of irregular heartbeat, chest tightness, blurred vision, nausea, and seizures.

Mechanism of action

Sevoflurane induces a reduction in junctional conductance by decreasing gap junction channel opening times and increasing gap junction channel closing times. Sevoflurane also activates calcium dependent ATPase in the sarcoplasmic reticulum by increasing the fluidity of the lipid membrane. It also appears to bind the D subunit of ATP synthase and NADH dehydrogenise and also binds to the GABA receptor, the large conductance Ca2+ activated potassium channel, the glutamate receptor, and the glycine receptor.
