Details

Phytonadione is used to treat and prevent low levels of certain substances (blood clotting factors) that your body naturally produces. These substances help your blood to thicken and stop bleeding normally (e.g., after an accidental cut or injury). Low levels of blood clotting factors increase the risk for unusual bleeding. Low levels may be caused by certain medications (e.g., warfarin) or medical conditions (e.g., obstructive jaundice). Vitamin K helps to treat and prevent unusual bleeding by increasing the body's production of blood clotting factors.

Typical Uses

Phytomenadione is used to treat bleeding (haemorrhage or threatened haemorrhage), associated with a low blood level of prothrombin or factor VII. It is also used to treat vitamin K deficiency in infants and children.

Side Effects

Common side effects of phytonadione include nausea, vomiting, epigastric pain, miosis, salivation, sweating, lacrimation, dyspnoea, bronchospasm.

Drug Interactions

  • Phytonadione+tramadol- Tramadol may rarely cause seizures, and combining it with other medications that can also cause seizures such as physostigmine may increase that risk. The interaction may be more likely if you are elderly, undergoing alcohol or drug withdrawal, have a history of seizures, or have a condition affecting the central nervous system such as a brain tumour or head trauma.
  • Phytonadione+bupropion- Bupropion may rarely cause seizures, and combining it with other medications that can also cause seizures such as physostigmine may increase that risk. The interaction may be more likely if you are elderly, undergoing alcohol or drug withdrawal, have a history of seizures, or have a condition affecting the central nervous system such as a brain tumour or head trauma.
  • Phytonadione+metrizamide- Before you undergo any imaging procedure where metrizamide may be injected directly into the spine let your doctor know if you are currently being treated with physostigmine. Injection of metrizamide into the spine can sometimes cause seizures, and the risk may be increased if you are also using other medications that can cause seizures such as physostigmine. The interaction may be more likely if you are elderly, undergoing alcohol or drug withdrawal, have a history of seizures, or have a condition affecting the central nervous system such as a brain tumour or head trauma.

Mechanism of action

Phytomenadione belongs to the group antidote to anticoagulants. It acts by preventing the bleeding after the use of blood thinning medications (anticoagulants).
