Oxymetazoline is a decongestant that shrinks blood vessels in the nasal passages. Dilated blood vessels can cause nasal congestion (stuffy nose). Oxymetazoline nasal (for the nose) is for temporary relief of nasal congestion (stuffy nose) caused by allergies or the common cold. Ask a doctor if it is safe for you to take oxymetazoline if you have heart disease, high blood pressure, coronary artery disease diabetes a thyroid disorder or enlarged prostate or urination problems.


Typical Uses

Oxymetazoline is used for temporary relief of congestion in the nose caused by various conditions including the common cold, sinusitis, hay fever, and allergies. It works by narrowing the blood vessels in the nose area, reducing swelling and congestion. This drug may also be used to relieve "plugged ears" and to reduce swelling in the nose before certain surgery or procedures.


Side Effects

Stop using oxymetazoline nasal and notify your doctor immediately if you have ongoing or worsening symptoms severe burning or stinging in your nose after using the nasal spray chest pain, fast or uneven heart rate or severe headache, buzzing in your ears, anxiety, confusion, or feeling short of breath. Common oxymetazoline side effects may include mild burning or stinging of the nose sneezing or runny nose.


Drug Interactions

  • Oxymetazoline+albuterol- Using albuterol together with oxymetazoline nasal may increase cardiovascular side effects such as elevations in heart rate and blood pressure or irregular heart rhythm. Let your doctor know if you have pre-existing cardiovascular disorders such as heart disease, arrhythmia, or high blood pressure. You may need a dose adjustment or more frequent monitoring to safely use both medications.
  • Oxymetazoline+arformoterol- Using oxymetazoline nasal together with arformoterol may increase cardiovascular side effects such as elevations in heart rate and blood pressure or irregular heart rhythm. Let your doctor know if you have pre-existing cardiovascular disorders such as heart disease, arrhythmia, or high blood pressure. You may need a dose adjustment or more frequent monitoring to safely use both medications.
  • Oxymetazoline+deserpidine- Using oxymetazoline nasal together with deserpidine may cause an increase in blood pressure. Contact your doctor if your condition changes. If your doctor does prescribe these medications together, you may need a dose adjustment or need your blood pressure checked more often to safely use both medications.
  • Oxymetazoline+furazolidone- Talk to your doctor before using oxymetazoline nasal together with furazolidone. Combining these medications may occasionally increase the risk and/or severity of side effects such as increased blood pressure and heart rate. You may need a dose adjustment or more frequent monitoring by your doctor to safely use both medications.

Oxymetazoline belongs to a class of medications called nasal decongestants. It works by narrowing the blood vessels in the nasal passages and relieves congestion.
