Nitazoxanide is an antiprotozoal agent. Nitazoxanide is used to treat diarrhoea in adults and children caused by the protozoa Giardia lamblia. Nitazoxanide is also used to treat diarrhoea caused by the protozoa Cryptosporidium parvum. These conditions are also sometimes referred to as travellers’ diarrhoea. Take nitazoxanide with food. Talk to your doctor before taking nitazoxanide if you have liver disease kidney disease or HIV infection or problems with your immune system.

Typical Uses

Nitazoxanide is used to treat diarrhoea due to certain intestinal parasitic infections. Take this medication by mouth every 12 hours for 3 days with food, or as directed by your doctor. Children less than 11 years of age should not take these tablets. Instead, they should take nitazoxanide suspension.

Side Effects

Stop taking nitazoxanide and get immediate medical assistance if you experience a rare allergic reaction. Other, less serious side effects may be more likely to occur. Continue to take the medication and talk to your doctor if you have abdominal pain nausea diarrhoea vomiting or headache.

Drug Interactions

• Nitazoxanide+sodium iodide I-123- Nitazoxanide may affect the diagnostic results of sodium iodide I-123. Talk to your doctor before you are scheduled for testing to find out if and for how long you should stop using nitazoxanide so that it does not interfere with sodium iodide I-123 test results.
• Nitazoxanide+sodium iodide I- 131- Nitazoxanide may affect the diagnostic results of sodium iodide I-131. Talk to your doctor before you are scheduled for testing to find out if and for how long you should stop using nitazoxanide so that it does not interfere with sodium iodide I-131 test results.

Mechanism of action

Nitazoxanide belongs to the class of medications called anti-parasitic and antiviral agents. It inhibits the production of certain chemicals and substances essential for energy metabolism and growth of the parasite.
