Details
Neostigmine is used for treating myasthenia gravis. Neostigmine is a cholinesterase inhibitor. It works by improving the transmission of nerve impulses in muscles so that the muscles are better able to work. Do not use neostigmine if you are allergic to any ingredient in neostigmine or you are taking procainamide, a quinine derivative (e.g., quinidine), or succinylcholine. Neostigmine may be taken with or without food. If stomach upset occurs, take with food to reduce stomach irritation.
Typical Uses
Neostigmine is used to improve muscle strength in patients with a certain muscle disease (myasthenia gravis). It works by preventing the breakdown of a certain natural substance (acetylcholine) in your body. Acetylcholine is needed for normal muscle function.
Side Effects
Common neostigmine side effects may include abdominal cramps diarrhoea difficulty speaking dilation of pupils dizziness drowsiness excess saliva frequent urination gas headache increased sweating joint pain muscle twitching weakness.
Drug Interactions
- Neostigmine+tramadol- Tramadol may rarely cause seizures, and combining it with other medications that can also cause seizures such as neostigmine may increase that risk. The interaction may be more likely if you are elderly, undergoing alcohol or drug withdrawal, have a history of seizures, or have a condition affecting the central nervous system such as a brain tumour or head trauma.
- Neostigmine+bupropion- Bupropion may rarely cause seizures, and combining it with other medications that can also cause seizures such as neostigmine may increase that risk. The interaction may be more likely if you are elderly, undergoing alcohol or drug withdrawal, have a history of seizures, or have a condition affecting the central nervous system such as a brain tumour or head trauma.
- Neostigmine+metrizamide- Before you undergo any imaging procedure where metrizamide may be injected directly into the spine let your doctor know if you are currently being treated with neostigmine. Injection of metrizamide into the spine can sometimes cause seizures, and the risk may be increased if you are also using other medications that can cause seizures such as neostigmine.
- Neostigmine+iopamidol- Before you undergo any imaging procedure where iopamidol may be injected directly into the spine let your doctor know if you are currently being treated with neostigmine. Injection of iopamidol into the spine can sometimes cause seizures, and the risk may be increased if you are also using other medications that can cause seizures such as neostigmine.
