Details
Naphazoline nasal is a decongestant that shrinks blood vessels in the nasal passages. Dilated blood vessels can cause nasal congestion (stuffy nose). Naphazoline nasal (for the nose) is for temporary relief of stuffy nose caused by hay fever, allergies, or the common cold. Ask a doctor if it is safe for you to take this medicine if you have heart disease, high blood pressure diabetes a thyroid disorder or urination problems caused by an enlarged prostate. Do not give this medicine to a child younger than 12 years old without medical advice.
Typical Uses
Naphazoline nasal is used for temporary relief of congestion in the nose caused by various conditions including the common cold, sinusitis, hay fever, and allergies. It works by narrowing the blood vessels in the nose area, reducing swelling and congestion. This drug may also be used to relieve "plugged ears" and to reduce swelling in the nose before certain surgeries or procedures.
Side Effects
Stop using naphazoline nasal and inform your doctor immediately if you have ongoing or worsening nasal stuffiness chest pain, fast or uneven heart rate or severe headache, buzzing in your ears, anxiety, confusion, or feeling short of breath.
Drug Interactions
- Naphazoline+albuterol- Using albuterol together with naphazoline nasal may increase cardiovascular side effects such as elevations in heart rate and blood pressure or irregular heart rhythm. Let your doctor know if you have pre-existing cardiovascular disorders such as heart disease, arrhythmia, or high blood pressure.
- Naphazoline+bitolterol- Using bitolterol together with naphazoline nasal may increase cardiovascular side effects such as elevations in heart rate and blood pressure or irregular heart rhythm. Let your doctor know if you have pre-existing cardiovascular disorders such as heart disease, arrhythmia, or high blood pressure.
- Naphazoline+duloxetine- Both duloxetine and naphazoline nasal can increase blood pressure and heart rate, and combining them may enhance these effects. Talk to your doctor before using these medications, especially if you have a history of high blood pressure or heart disease.
- Naphazoline+midodrine- Talk to your doctor before using midodrine together with naphazoline nasal. Midodrine may cause significant increases in blood pressure by constricting the blood vessels, and the risk may be increased when used with other drugs that also affect blood pressure such as decongestants, stimulants, and certain medications for headache or glaucoma. You may need a dose adjustment or more frequent monitoring by your doctor to safely use both medications.
Mechanism of action
Naphazoline nitrate belongs to a class of medication called alpha 2 agonist. It works by temporarily narrowing swollen blood vessels and reduces swelling of mucous membrane in the nose to relieve congestion or irritation.
