Details

Miconazole is an antifungal medication that fights infections caused by fungus. Miconazole is also used for oral treatment and prevention of fungal infections of the mouth, throat and food pipe. Miconazole is effectively used in vulvovaginal (vagina and external genital organs) candidiasis (thrush) and other yeast infection of the vagina. Further, Miconazole is also prescribed for napkin rash and inflammation of the folds of tissue surrounding the nails of toes or fingers (paronychia).

Miconazole is used to treat fungal infection in the mouth or throat. Miconazole is known as an azole antifungal drug. It works by stopping the growth of fungus.


Side Effects

Inform your doctor immediately if you have severe burning or pain in your mouth new sores in your mouth or on your tongue tooth problems pain or swelling in your gums or pale skin, feeling light-headed or short of breath, rapid heart rate, trouble concentrating. Less common side effects of miconazole include decreased sense of taste unusual or unpleasant taste mild pain or discomfort in your mouth or tongue cough, dry mouth nausea, vomiting, diarrhoea headache or tired feeling.


Drug Interactions

  • Miconazole+anisindione- Using anisindione together with miconazole can cause you to bleed more easily. You may need a dose adjustment in addition to testing of your prothrombin time.
  • Miconazole+dicumarol- Using dicumarol together with miconazole can cause you to bleed more easily. You may need a dose adjustment in addition to testing of your prothrombin time.
  • Miconazole+warfarin- Using warfarin together with miconazole can cause you to bleed more easily. You may need a dose adjustment in addition to testing of your prothrombin time.


Mechanism of action

Miconazole acts mainly by preventing the growth of fungi. It interacts with chemicals (cytochrome P-450) inside the fungus and prevents the synthesis of an essential component of fungal cell membrane (ergosterol) this results in increased cellular permeability causing leakage of cellular contents from fungal cell, ultimately preventing fungal growth. Miconazole possesses antifungal activity against dermatophytes and yeasts as well as antibacterial activity against certain gram-positive bacilli and cocci.
