Methocarbamol is a muscle relaxant. It works by blocking nerve impulses (or pain sensations) that are sent to your brain. Methocarbamol is used together with rest and physiotherapy to treat skeletal muscle conditions such as pain or injury. Before using methocarbamol, tell your doctor if you have myasthenia gravis. Methocarbamol may impair your thinking or reactions. Be careful if you drive or do anything that requires you to be alert. You may need to reduce your methocarbamol dose after the first 2 or 3 days of treatment.


Typical Uses

Methocarbamol is used to treat muscle spasms/pain. It is usually used along with rest, physical therapy, and other treatment. It works by helping to relax the muscles.


Side Effects

Stop using methocarbamol and inform your doctor immediately if you have a serious side effect such as fever, chills, flu symptoms slow heart rate feeling like you might pass out seizure (convulsions) or jaundice (yellowing of your skin or eyes).


Drug Interactions

  • Methocarbamol+propoxyphene- Using propoxyphene together with methocarbamol may increase side effects such as dizziness, drowsiness, confusion, and difficulty concentrating. Some people, especially the elderly, may also experience impairment in thinking, judgment, and motor coordination. You should take propoxyphene exactly as prescribed by your doctor. Do not take larger doses or use the drug more frequently than prescribed.
  • Methocarbamol+buprenorphine- Using buprenorphine together with other medications that cause central nervous system depression such as methocarbamol can lead to serious side effects such as respiratory distress, coma, or even death. You may need a dose adjustment or more frequent monitoring by your doctor to safely use both medications.
  • Methocarbamol+sodium oxybate- Using sodium oxybate together with methocarbamol may increase side effects such as drowsiness, dizziness, light-headedness, confusion, depression, low blood pressure, slow or shallow breathing, and impairment in thinking, judgment, and motor coordination.
