Details

Lisinopril is an angiotensin converting enzyme (ACE). Lisinopril is used to treat high blood pressure (hypertension) or congestive heart failure. It is also used to improve survival after a heart attack. To make sure lisinopril is safe for you, tell your doctor if you have kidney disease (or if you are on dialysis) liver disease diabetes or high levels of potassium in your blood. Do not use lisinopril if you are pregnant. Stop using this medication and tell your doctor right away if you become pregnant. This medicine can cause injury or death to the unborn baby if you take the medicine during your second or third trimester.


Typical Uses

Lisinopril is used to treat high blood pressure (hypertension). Lowering high blood pressure helps prevent strokes, heart attacks, and kidney problems. It is also used to treat heart failure and to improve survival after a heart attack. Lisinopril is an ACE inhibitor and works by relaxing blood vessels so that blood can flow more easily. This medication may also be used to help protect the kidneys from harm due to diabetes.


Side Effects

Common lisinopril side effects may include a light-headed feeling, like you might pass out little or no urinating high potassium - nausea, slow or unusual heart rate, weakness, loss of movement kidney problems - little or no urinating, painful or difficult urination, swelling in your feet or ankles, feeling tired or short of breath or liver problems - nausea, upper stomach pain, itching, tired feeling, loss of appetite, dark urine, clay-coloured stools, jaundice (yellowing of the skin or eyes).


Drug Interactions

  • Lisinopril+aliskiren- Using aliskiren together with lisinopril may increase the risk of serious side effects such as kidney problems, low blood pressure, and high potassium levels in the blood. High levels of potassium can develop into a condition known as hyperkalemia, which in severe cases can lead to kidney failure, muscle paralysis, irregular heart rhythm, and cardiac arrest.
  • Lisinopril+candesartan- Using lisinopril together with candesartan may increase the risk of side effects such as low blood pressure, kidney function impairment, and a condition called hyperkalemia (high blood potassium). In severe cases, hyperkalemia can lead to kidney failure, muscle paralysis, irregular heart rhythm, and cardiac arrest.
  • Lisinopril+irbesartan- Using lisinopril together with irbesartan may increase the risk of side effects such as low blood pressure, kidney function impairment, and a condition called hyperkalemia (high blood potassium). In severe cases, hyperkalemia can lead to kidney failure, muscle paralysis, irregular heart rhythm, and cardiac arrest.
  • Lisinopril+olmesartan- Using lisinopril together with olmesartan may increase the risk of side effects such as low blood pressure, kidney function impairment, and a condition called hyperkalemia (high blood potassium). In severe cases, hyperkalemia can lead to kidney failure, muscle paralysis, irregular heart rhythm, and cardiac arrest.


Mechanism of action

Lisinopril belongs to group of medicines called angiotensin-converting-enzyme (ACE) inhibitor. It acts by inhibiting production of chemical angiotensin II resulting in relaxation of blood vessels, and thus, reduces blood pressure.
