Details
Lincomycin is an antibiotic that fights bacteria. Lincomycin is used to treat severe bacterial infections in people who cannot use penicillin antibiotics. Lincomycin is used only for a severe infection. This medicine will not treat a viral infection such as the common cold or flu. Antibiotic medicine can cause overgrowth of normally harmless bacteria in the intestines. If you have diarrhoea that is watery or bloody, stop using lincomycin and call your doctor right away. To make sure lincomycin is safe for you, also tell your doctor if you have asthma severe allergies or liver or kidney disease. Lincomycin is usually given every 12 to 24 hours.
Typical Uses
Lincomycin is used for treating serious bacterial infections caused by susceptible strains of streptococci, pneumococci, and staphylococci. Use of lincomycin is reserved for penicillin-allergic patients or when penicillin-based treatment is not appropriate. This antibiotic should only be used to treat serious infections because of rare but sometimes fatal intestinal problems have occurred (pseudomembranous colitis).
Side Effects
Common side effects of lincomycin include little or no urinating blisters or ulcers in your mouth, red or swollen gums, trouble swallowing sudden weakness or ill feeling, fever, chills, swollen glands, cough, trouble breathing or joint pain, skin sores, rash or itching, easy bruising or bleeding.
Drug Interactions
- Lincomycin+atracurium- Using atracurium together with lincomycin may have additive effects. You should be closely monitored for prolong breathing cessation and respiratory paralysis. You may need a dose adjustment or special test if you use both medications.
- Lincomycin+balsalazide- Talk to your doctor before using balsalazide together with lincomycin. Antibiotics like lincomycin may reduce the effectiveness of balsalazide when taken orally. Your doctor may be able to prescribe alternatives that do not interact, or you may need a dose adjustment or more frequent monitoring by your doctor to safely use both medications.
- Lincomycin+cisatracurium- Using lincomycin together with cisatracurium may have additive effects. You should be closely monitored for prolong breathing cessation and respiratory paralysis. You may need a dose adjustment or special test if you use both medications.
- Lincomycin+rocuronium- Using lincomycin together with rocuronium may have additive effects. You should be closely monitored for prolong breathing cessation and respiratory paralysis. You may need a dose adjustment or special test if you use both medications.
Mechanism of action
Lincomycin belongs to the class of antibiotics known as lincosamides. It acts by stopping the growth of the bacteria.
