Ketorolac is a non-steroidal anti inflammatory drug (NSAID). This medicine works by reducing substances in the body that cause pain, fever, and inflammation. Ketorolac nasal (for the nose) is used short-term (5 days or less) to treat moderate to severe pain. Ketorolac can increase your risk of fatal heart attack or stroke, especially if you use it long term or take high doses, or if you have heart disease. Ketorolac may also cause stomach or intestinal bleeding, which can be fatal. To make sure ketorolac nasal is safe for you, tell your doctor if you have heart disease, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, diabetes, or if you smoke a history of heart attack, stroke, or blood clot a history of stomach ulcers or bleeding ulcerative colitis or Crohn's disease asthma liver or kidney disease fluid retention or if you have recently had surgery. Using ketorolac nasal in third trimester of pregnancy may harm the unborn baby. Ketorolac may also increase the risk of uterine bleeding and is not for use during labour and delivery.


Typical Uses

Ketorolac is used for the short-term treatment (up to 5 days) of moderate to severe pain in adults, such as after surgery. Reducing pain helps you recover more comfortably so you can return to your normal daily activities. This medication is a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID). It works by decreasing inflammation, swelling, and pain.


Side Effects

Get immediate medical assistance if you experience chest pain or pressure, pain spreading to your jaw or shoulder, nausea, sweating or signs of a stroke. Stop using ketorolac and inform your doctor if you have shortness of breath (even with mild exertion) swelling or rapid weight gain the first sign of any skin rash, no matter how mild signs of stomach bleeding-bloody or tarry stools, coughing up blood or vomit that looks like coffee grounds liver problems-nausea, upper stomach pain, itching, tired feeling, flu-like symptoms, loss of appetite, dark urine, clay-coloured stools, jaundice (yellowing of the skin or eyes) kidney problems-little or no urinating, painful or difficult urination, swelling in your feet or ankles, feeling tired or short of breath low red blood cells (anaemia)-pale skin, feeling light-headed or short of breath, rapid heart rate, trouble concentrating or severe skin reaction-fever, sore throat, swelling in your face or tongue, burning in your eyes, skin pain followed by a red or purple skin rash that spreads (especially in the face or upper body) and causes blistering and peeling.


Drug Interactions

  • Ketorolac+adefovir- Talk to your doctor before using adefovir together with ketorolac. Adefovir may cause kidney problems, and combining it with other medications that can also affect the kidney such as ketorolac may increase that risk. You may need a dose adjustment or more frequent monitoring by your doctor to safely use both medications.
  • Ketorolac+aspirin- Using aspirin and ketorolac are not recommended. Using aspirin together with ketorolac can cause nausea, vomiting, stomach pain, drowsiness, black or bloody stools, coughing up blood, urinating less than usual, and shallow breathing. Do not use any other over-the-counter cold, allergy, or pain medication without first asking your doctor.
  • Ketorolac+bromfenac- Using bromfenac and ketorolac is not recommended. Using bromfenac together with ketorolac can cause nausea, vomiting, stomach pain, drowsiness, black or bloody stools, coughing up blood, urinating less than usual, and shallow breathing. Do not use any other over-the-counter cold, allergy, or pain medication without first asking your doctor.
  • Ketorolac+dalteparin- Talk to your doctor before using dalteparin together with ketorolac. Combining these medications can increase the risk of bleeding complications. You may need a dose adjustment or more frequent monitoring by your doctor to safely use both medications.


Mechanism of action

Ketorolac belongs to a class of medications called non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) which works by blocking the effect of enzyme called cyclooxygenase resulting in decreased production of prostaglandins (a chemical associated with pain) thereby easing pain, swelling and inflammation.
