Ketoprofen is a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID). Ketoprofen works by reducing hormones that cause inflammation and pain in the body. Ketoprofen is used to treat pain or inflammation caused by arthritis. The ketoprofen regular capsule is also used to treat mild to moderate pain, or menstrual pain. Only ketoprofen extended-release capsules are used for treating arthritis. This form of ketoprofen will not work fast enough to treat acute pain. You should not use ketoprofen if you are allergic to it, or if you have ever had an asthma attack or severe allergic reaction after taking aspirin or an NSAID. Ask a doctor if it is safe for you to take this medicine if you have heart disease, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, diabetes, or if you smoke a history of heart attack, stroke, or blood clot a history of stomach ulcers or bleeding asthma liver or kidney disease or fluid retention. Taking ketoprofen in third trimester of pregnancy may harm the unborn baby.

Ketoprofen is used to relieve pain from various conditions. It also reduces pain, swelling, and joint stiffness from arthritis. This medication is a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID). It works by blocking your body's production of certain natural substances that cause inflammation. This effect helps to decrease swelling, pain, or fever. This medication may also be used to treat gout attacks.


Side Effects

Get immediate medical assistance if you experience chest pain spreading to your jaw or shoulder, sudden numbness or weakness on one side of the body, slurred speech or feeling short of breath. Stop using ketoprofen and inform your doctor if you have shortness of breath (even with mild exertion) swelling or rapid weight gain the first sign of any skin rash, no matter how mild signs of stomach bleeding-bloody or tarry stools, coughing up blood or vomit that looks like coffee grounds liver problems-nausea, upper stomach pain, itching, tired feeling, flu-like symptoms, loss of appetite, dark urine, clay-coloured stools, jaundice (yellowing of the skin or eyes) kidney problems-little or no urinating, painful or difficult urination, swelling in your feet or ankles, feeling tired or short of breath low red blood cells (anaemia)-pale skin, feeling light-headed or short of breath, rapid heart rate, trouble concentrating or severe skin reaction.


Drug Interactions

  • Ketoprofen+adefovir- Talk to your doctor before using adefovir together with ketoprofen. Adefovir may cause kidney problems, and combining it with other medications that can also affect the kidney such as ketoprofen may increase that risk. You may need a dose adjustment or more frequent monitoring by your doctor to safely use both medications.
  • Ketoprofen+ardeparin- Talk to your doctor before using ardeparin together with ketoprofen. Combining these medications can increase the risk of bleeding complications. You may need a dose adjustment or more frequent monitoring by your doctor to safely use both medications.
  • Ketoprofen+cidofovir- Using cidofovir together with ketoprofen is not recommended. Cidofovir may cause kidney damage, and combining it with other medications that can also affect the kidney such as ketoprofen may increase that risk. If you have been receiving ketoprofen, you may need to wait at least seven days after your last dose before you can start treatment with cidofovir.
  • Ketoprofen+leflunomide- Leflunomide may cause liver damage and taking it with other medications that can also affect the liver such as ketoprofen may increase that risk. You should avoid or limit the use of alcohol while being treated with these medications.


Mechanism of action

Ketoprofen is a pain killer medication belongs to group of medicines called non-selective cyclooxygenase inhibitors (traditional non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug). It inhibits the synthesis of chemicals like prostaglandin and thromboxane that results in the reduction of fever, formation of blood clots, pain and inflammation.
