Details
Ivermectin is an anti-parasite medication. Ivermectin is used to treat infections in the body that are caused by certain parasites. You should not use ivermectin if you are allergic to it. To make sure ivermectin is safe for you tell your doctor if you have liver or kidney disease or cancer, HIV or AIDS, or other conditions that can weaken your immune system. Ivermectin should not be given to a child who weighs less than 15 kg.
Typical Uses
Ivermectin is used to treat certain parasitic roundworm infections. Curing parasitic infections helps to improve your quality of life. In people with weakened defence (immune) systems, curing roundworm infections can reduce the risk of developing a severe or life-threatening infection. Ivermectin belongs to a class of drugs known as anti-helmintics. It works by paralyzing and killing parasites. This drug may also be used to treat other parasitic infections, including lice and scabies.
Side Effects
Common side effects of ivermectin include eye pain or redness, puffy eyes, problems with your vision severe skin rash, itching, or rash with pus confusion, change in your mental status, balance problems, trouble walking fever, swollen glands, stomach pain, joint pain, swelling in your hands or feet fast heart rate, trouble breathing loss of bladder or bowel control neck or back pain, seizure (convulsions) or a light-headed feeling, like you might pass out.
Drug Interactions
- Ivermectin+anisindione- Ivermectin can increase the effects of anisindione and cause you to bleed more easily. Call your doctor immediately if you have any unusual bleeding, bruising, vomiting, blood in your urine or stools, headache, dizziness, or weakness while taking these medications.
- Ivermectin+bosentan- Bosentan may reduce the blood levels and effects of ivermectin. Contact your doctor if your symptoms worsen or your condition changes during treatment with these medications. Your doctor may be able to prescribe alternatives that do not interact, or you may need a dose adjustment or more frequent monitoring to safely use both medications.
- Ivermectin+darunavir- Darunavir may increase the blood levels and effects of ivermectin. You may need a dose adjustment or more frequent monitoring by your doctor to safely use both medications. Contact your doctor if your condition changes or you experience increased side effects.
- Ivermectin+nilotinib- Nilotinib may increase the blood levels and effects of ivermectin. You may need a dose adjustment or more frequent monitoring by your doctor to safely use both medications. Contact your doctor if your condition changes or you experience increased side effects.
- Ivermectin+rufinamide- Rufinamide may reduce the blood levels and effects of ivermectin. Contact your doctor if your symptoms worsen or your condition changes during treatment with these medications. Your doctor may be able to prescribe alternatives that do not interact, or you may need a dose adjustment or more frequent monitoring to safely use both medications.
