Ivabradine is used in certain people with chronic heart failure, to help lower the risk of needing to be hospitalized when symptoms get worse. Ivabradine is not for use if you already have heart failure symptoms that recently got worse before starting this medicine. Ivabradine works by affecting your heart's electrical activity in order to slow the heart rate. Do not use ivabradine if you are pregnant. It could harm the unborn baby or lead to premature birth. To make sure ivabradine is safe for you, tell your doctor if you have other heart problems not being treated with ivabradine liver disease high or low blood pressure if you have a pacemaker or if you take other heart medicine or blood pressure medication. You should not use ivabradine if you are allergic to it, or if you have a serious heart condition such as "sick sinus syndrome" or "AV block" (unless you have a pacemaker) heart failure symptoms that recently got worse severe liver disease if your resting heart rate is less than 60 beats per minute if your blood pressure is lower than 90 over 50 or if you depend on a pacemaker to regulate your heart rate.

Typical Uses

Ivabradine is used by people with a certain heart problem (chronic heart failure), to help prevent it from getting worse and needing treatment in a hospital. Heart failure is a condition where your heart does not pump blood as well as it should. Ivabradine works by making your heart beat more slowly. It should not be used if you have a slow resting heartbeat (less than 60 beats per minute) before starting ivabradine, low blood pressure, or if your heart failure symptoms have recently gotten worse.

Side Effects

Common side effects of ivabradine include very slow heartbeats with dizziness, tiredness, or a lack of energy a light-headed feeling, like you might pass out shortness of breath that is worse than usual or chest tightness, racing or pounding heartbeats, fluttering in your chest.

Drug Interactions

• Ivabradine+apomorphine- Using ivabradine together with apomorphine can increase the risk of an irregular heart rhythm that may be serious and potentially life-threatening, although it is a relatively rare side effect. You may be more susceptible if you have a heart condition called congenital long QT syndrome, other cardiac diseases, conduction abnormalities, or electrolyte disturbances.
• Ivabradine+atazanavir- Using ivabradine together with atazanavir is not recommended. Combining these medications may significantly increase the blood levels and effects of ivabradine, which may result in excessive slowing of heart rate or other conduction disturbances.
• Ivabradine+bosutinib- Using ivabradine together with bosutinib can increase the risk of an irregular heart rhythm that may be serious and potentially life-threatening, although it is a relatively rare side effect. You may be more susceptible if you have a heart condition called congenital long QT syndrome, other cardiac diseases, conduction abnormalities, or electrolyte disturbances.
• Ivabradine+cisapride- Using ivabradine together with cisapride can increase the risk of an irregular heart rhythm that may be serious and potentially life-threatening, although it is a relatively rare side effect. You may be more susceptible if you have a heart condition called congenital long QT syndrome, other cardiac diseases, conduction abnormalities, or electrolyte disturbances.

Mechanism of action

Ivabradine mainly works by reducing the heart rate by a few beats per minute which lowers the heart's need for oxygen especially in the situations when an angina attack is more likely to happen. In this way, it helps to control and reduce the number of angina attacks and further helps to improve the heart functioning and vital prognosis in affected patients.
