Isoxsuprine is in a class of drugs called vasodilators. Isoxsuprine relaxes veins and arteries, which makes them wider and allows blood to pass through them more easily. These actions may help treat the symptoms of conditions such as cerebral vascular insufficiency (poor blood flow to the brain), arteriosclerosis (hardening of the arteries), Reynaud’s phenomenon, and other conditions involving poor blood flow in the veins and arteries. Isoxsuprine should not be used immediately postpartum (after delivering a baby), or if you have a bleeding disorder.

Typical Uses

Isoxsuprine is used along with other treatment for certain blood vessel diseases (e.g., arteriosclerosis obliterans, Reynaud’s disease, Buerger's disease, cerebro-vascular insufficiency). It works by widening blood vessels to help increase blood flow (improve circulation) to certain parts of the body (e.g., hands/feet, brain). This effect may help to decrease symptoms such as cold hands and feet, numbness, tingling, and decreased memory or judgment.

Side Effects

Stop taking isoxsuprine and inform your doctor if you develop a rash. Other side effects of isoxsuprine may include chest pain or an irregular heartbeat (call your doctor if this becomes bothersome) nausea or vomiting or dizziness or weakness.

Drug Interactions

• Isoxsuprine+tizanidine- Tizanidine and isoxsuprine may have additive effects in lowering your blood pressure. You may experience headache, dizziness, light-headedness, fainting, or changes in pulse or heart rate. These side effects are most likely to be seen at the beginning of treatment, following a dose increase, or when treatment is restarted after an interruption.
